Runing with the ruins

The bus was late, as always. So I arrived at 4pm, and every ruins closes at 5pm.
I'll have to run for this one.
But at the ticket office, good surprise : entrance free when less then 1h to the closure.
So I start visit the man pyramid, then the sacred senote (a natural "well" : cylindrical hole in the ground filled with water). Then I have to run amond the ruins and the huge population of sellers.<br ...

Chichen Itza

We drove to Chichen Itza... around 2 hours from Playa del Carmen.

We arrived early so there wasn't too many people. We took amazing pictures, we had the first pyramid almost for ourselves. Wow! We spent a lot of time just staring at it.

We walked around the site for a few hours, then decided to drive back ...
Shane says:

I can’t believe we almost didn’t come here, to Merida. It’s a great, unpretentious town (well,
city – it is after all the capital of the state of Yucatan) with not too many
tourists, but still has enough
stuff to keep a traveller busy for a few day. Or more than a few,
because when we finally leave we would have been here for a week.

<!--[if !supportEmptyParas ...

Day 4: skull racks and all-you-can-eat buffets

... continued to excavate and saw piles of rocks covered with trees that remain untouched. In short, Chichen Itza definitely deserves to be a world wonder (Mom, I am taking you some day)!

Now we are in the town of Piste taking a lunch break. The crowds started to swarm just before we left, so I would imagine it will be pretty busy when we get back. I´m really excited for the light and sound show tonight, though!
Seeing my 4th modern wonder - Chichen Itza

... on 3 helpings. They put on a bit of a dance and music performance then we drove to the cenote. Its like an underground cave that was used for water storage and ceremonies - nice and cool down there so I put on my bathers and went for a swim. It was like being at the beach at Victoria - I had to tippy toe in it was chilly! There were stalactites and mites all around plus a small hole in the top of the cave - perfect for a bit of ...

Chichen Itza & surroundings

... Itza represents one of the most advanced landmarks. The size, the harmony and all the architectural-astrological aspects of the construction are indeed impressive. What I did not like is that the place is practically all reconstructed in contrast to some other Mayan sites we've seen later on the trip (which were more natural and preserved "as ...

Chichen Itza ruins and diving into Ceonotes

Chichen Itza is the most tourist overrun ruin I have ever seen in Central America. There were zillions of vendors everywhere yelling out "1 dollar or you" and "almost free" and "whatever you like pretty lady". It was pretty and I learned alot but it's definately not my favourite central american ruin. After the tour we were taken to out next stop, the cenote, it was in Vallodolid (i think thats how you ...

Tour of Chichén Itzá

... was so nice, we got along well and hung out the whole time because we were both doing the tour alone.

We stopped at a big cenote on the way, one obviously most tours stop at since it was packed with tourists. There was a spot to jump in, I had to do that of course!

We could have done the tour with a tour guide, which probably would have helped ...

Uanset at logikken tilskriver noget andet. Der kom opsynsfolk ind, endda kørende i ambulancer (hvorfor ambulancer ved jeg ikke) - De forkyndte via megafoner, at folk skulle ...

Kyla wrote: Today, we went to Chichen Itza, a pyramid city (temples). Mayan. We did the ball court, great pyramid, steam bath, soldier palace, and the Nunnery. I found it interesting because the temples have gorgeous carvings and are fun to explore!

Ardice wrote: Tiring day today. Up and breakfasted early to hit the road to Chichen Itza.
