Today we took the train from Singapore to a town in the middle of peninsular Malaysia called Jerantut. We had to be at the station at 5 in the morning for a half five departure. There is obviously some formality which requires that you sit in an almost deserted station for 30minutes at 5 in the morning but we haven't figured it out yet! The train was pretty basic but was pretty comfy (the chairs tilted back which was pretty handy in my slightly hungover state). Although we had to get out of t...
Jerantut, Pahang, Malaysia jadjackson... the internet, simple -so when we got to Kuala Lumpur got lost! We drove around the one-way systems several times until Carol said she had seen enough of the Twin Towers in the city. She took over the navigating and we drove straight to our hotel.

The hotel is the Rennaisance 4+ star. Carol loves it. They offered to empty the mini bar as it was so expensive and let us use it with bits we bought locally. I think our dress code and the fact Claire had got a ...
Melaka State, Malaysia carolgreg... own bathroom and LCD TV, but staff made it. Wau brothers were unbelievably helpful and even drove us an hour to the Taman Negara. If in the area, stay and give them business! They deserve it! Plus spicy noodles for breakfast!

The jungle was fantastic, and no leeches!!! Trekked for 3 hours clambering over roots. Was so strenous but interesting. Did a canopy walk ...
Jerantut, Pahang, Malaysia clairey_b_away... recalled the words "there is only one person with the name Tom Blanning in the world"... and just as I walked out of the restaurant, there he was! It was great to see Tom and Hazel again and such a nice surprise after Thailand. We went for a drink ina floating restaurant and I had to run back to the tour company's restaurant to book a trek for tommorrow before they shut - as I hurried there, trying to make a shortcut, in my error ran straight into the mud of ...
Taman Negara, Malaysia becpowell... they were done the adult elephants were ridden into the river for their wash. They then went to be hosed off and we got to feed them fruit. The last part saw the baby elephants wander around amongst the people and we could feed them peanuts. Had a shower and changed then headed back to KL by car getting back about 6pm. Fantastic day and recommended if anyone is in KL for a few days! Had a quick dinner at KL Sentral station and then back to the hotel for sleep.
Kuala Gandah, Malaysia tyga... English well, and like the current regime about as much as I do. As we prepared for bed, a trick of acoustics brought clearly from across the river the musical chant of the muezzin calling the faithful to prayer. Just as it was in Egypt, it was hauntingly beautiful, perhaps my favorite new sound of the trip to date. (No, scratch that. My favorite new sound is the sound of bamboo rustling and creaking in the wind.)
Jerantut, Malaysia oneyearaway... was shaped like iron plating was actually pressboard. Of all materials to use for the treads of a steep stairway rising through a tropical rainforest that gets several hundred inches of rain a year, surely wood chips in glue has to be high on the list of inappropriate materials. After a half hour's steady careful descent, we came to our next challenge, the world's longest canopy walkway. My turn to whimper. As I ...
Taman Negara Rain Forest, Malaysia oneyearaway... foam pads about two inches thick placed right on the floorboards, and the backrests were angled wooden planks about a foot high. With butt on the seat and back on the plank, my knees were about level with my chin. My footboard was the backrest of the couple in front of me. Jack sat to my left. A constant trickle of water came in his side of the boat from the seam between two planks. From time to time our craft would hit the wake of a downstream ...
Jerantut, Malaysia oneyearaway... about 6 floating restaurants that are literally tied to the shore... whenever the water level rises, they simply make the bridge to shore alittle longer... or tell you you have to leave now, otherwise you have to swim back to shore. We were going to pay a guide to show us the park then realized - thats dumb, we have a map lets dominate this rain forest (and when they say rain forest they are not kidding - at 4pm everyday it rains like a ...
Jerantut, Malaysia herbst83... a hide where we rest for a while and look at the comment book that people who stayed there overnight have written and are glad that we didn't try and stay in one overnight as no one seemed to see anything and got attacked by leaches as well. We then walk back the way we came and pass the first person we've seen all day. We also spot monkeys and a black squirrel on the way back as well. For dinner we go for a safe bet and eat at the place where we had ...
