Third Culture Shock

... study has gone into the social phenomenon. There's even an e-magazine, Denizen, written by and for TCKs (http://www.denizen-mag.com).

So ciologist David Pollock describes a TCK, or global nomad, as "a person who has spent a significant part of his or her developmental years outside the parents' culture. The TCK builds relationships to all of the cultures, while not having full ownership of any. Although elements from each culture are assimilated into the TCK's life experience ...

The long and winding road

... wet is never a problem if you can get warm and dry and comfortable shortly afterwards, but going back to our room only exagerrated our woes. We both sat huddled over an electric two bar heater with wet toes, soggy limbs and damp spirits. It was at that point our planned two nights in the mountains was to become one.

Sleep came and went in short bursts throughout the night. The room next door was playing host to a group of young men ...

Masanagudi Jungle Trek

... us asking for more, which was promised in the form of a small brook a little way away. Pilling into an Omni car, stuffing ourselves into an open jeep left us with no option but to also hang onto the rails of the jeep, which was enjoyed by few…almost that a fight broke as to who will hang outside
the jeep..:).

The little brook was inviting enough till we landed inside it… ...

Snooty Ooty

... next to a full size boating lake, not forgetting a road junction that although named Charing Cross, more resembled the traffic craziness that is Piccadilly Circus - so cray that they actually had some traffic lights; very British in design but very Indian in effectiveness. It proved impossible to walk around the racecourse and lake every time we wanted to pop out for the odd vegetarian thali, so it was rent-a-scooter time again. A bit more interesting ...

Giz a job!

... Of course back in the days of yor our ancestors were so impressed with the hard working Tamils they took them to Sri Lanka (Then known as Ceylon, although many Sri Lankans still refer to it as Ceylon) to work on their plantations there. The rest is history, as they say. We ate at the restaurant downstairs at lunchtime and the tables were being cleared by 2 boys, aged approximately 10/11. There was something in the newspaper yesterday about ...

... phrase 'you look Indian' at which point I had to explain for the 1000th time that my mum was Sri Lankan tamil. If I have to explain this one more time...I will, so as not to seem rude, but I'll be irritated inside. Of course he did the 'ah! a tamil name!' when I told him my name was Sumathi. But he also did the same with equal surprise and gusto when I revealed my mum and sisters' names. I don't think he recognised that there was a tamil-theme that runs through my ...

Weekend Trip to Ooty

... on the way back. We also saw a wild elephant, but we could barely see it. I took a picture and it looks like a rock, but it seemed cool at the time! After 36 hairpin turns we made it to Ooty. I'm still not sure why, but its a touristy area, and there were lots of foreigners there so we were getting less stares than usual. The city was really pretty, and the weather was so much cooler than Mysore, since we were up in the mountains ...
