... and a general sense of decay, topped off with graffiti which of course was beyond my comprehension but I wondered how much of it might be political. These once-aristocratic residences are now converted into multiple flats, among second-hand shops, with homeless people sleeping in many doorways, and sleazy bars advertising girls (though we also saw an aircon company van using a naked woman as its ad, so maybe that's just how things are done ...
... walking tour followed. Our guide was a passionate historian. We learnt lots about Hungary during the Nazi and Soviet occupations. It is amazing and scary. The tour ended at a "Ruin Bar", they are bars that have been opened in ruinous previously public buildings (hospitals, schools etc), because after it stopped being communist there was no money from the USSR to maintain the buildings and services anymore.

... over both of them. Bought 2 x Budapest Passes (€33 each) at the rail station here which gives us 72 hours free public transport, entry to 8 museums, entry to a spa bath, 2 x walking tours! Wow, we'll need a holiday after this, only have 3 days to cover Budapest. Caught the subway to Lilla's and had to go down then up the steepest, longest & fastest elevators I've ever been on, bloody scary! Lilla is lovely, English is perfect & those people we've spoken ...

There was a couple stands on the street today selling cheap pastries. Dan and I got two different pastries to share. The ones in the pictures are of a cheese filled roll and a mixed berry pastry. It was the perfect afternoon snack (light, affordable, and yummy).
