Agra to Khajuarho

We woke very early to catch thhe train from Agra to Khajuarho. Because of fog in New Delhi, 220 miles away, the train was 4 and a half hours late. While standing at the station, I asked our guide why the men ride on the motorbikes with helmets but the women and children squeezed along don'hae helmets. He laughed and said it would be too much to ask a woman to wear a safety helmet because she has to take care of her sari and the children while they are riding. Agra is a big center for inlaid m...

Negotiating train stations in India is a real adventure. We all huddle together like scared rabbits which is what we feel like. Walking through the traffic to get across the street, stepping over and around people sleeping on the ground and being totally an object of much curiosity is all part of the trip. As I mentioned before, men come right up to us and just stand there and stare. We got up at 4:30 to catch a 6 am train so it was still dark. The seats are preassigned and fairly comfortable...

Khajuraho temples and puppets

This morning we flew from Varanasi to Khajuraho, which is in the middle of India. We had a woman pilot, which was cool. This afternoon, we went to some ancient temples, that were built over a 1000 years ago. They were very beautiful, with lots of interesting carvings of elephants, lions, battle scenes, ladies dancing, putting on makeup, and posing. Lu especially liked the elephants and lions. I liked running around after being in a city for the last couple of days. We saw lots of girls coming...

We saw several types of deer and birds, peahens (as opposed to peacocks), wild boar, dirty great big spiders and their webs. Around 9.30 we stopped at the Ken river and after a while of sitting spotted a crocodile in the water a fair way off. We heard some barking sounds which R.K. said were warning calls of the deer and he had ...

Khajuraho-Extraordinary Temple Art

... A very small minority of the sculptures show figures in sexual acts, and these have stirred controversy and some notoriety. I will avoid posting those as I don't want to create any more. As you will see the artists were very talented in their depictions.

It appears to me that even in 950 AD., these folks knew how to throw a party, and how to pleasure themselves. I will send a few examples out to a few of you via email.
Others believe that they were constructed
as such to lure men and women back to the family and worldly life, which play an important part in Hinduism. I believe they were used as pleasure pavilions for mass royal orgy parties and were built in an isolated place by a playboy who didn't want to be disturbed as he indulged in all his fantasies. Amongst the carvings there are broad-hipped and high breasted nymphs (apsaras ...

... at the bus station to be told the bus to Jhansi wouldn't be running, so I took a jeep to Bamitha, where I was told I could get another. Several minutes later, a man insisted that there was no other bus going in the direction I needed and implored me to take another jeep shared taxi to Chatrapur. It turned out he was absolutely right and reinforcing what I had started to believe: Indians will tell you anything, rather than tell you they don't understand you or ...
