... it will get cold here but there is beach for the summers. the cities are a lot smaller. if you really want to have a "korean" experience go here. there wont be as many foreigners and you will probably have to learn korean. the only food from home will be pizza and burgers. there are a lot of national parks in this area. but don’t expect wilderness, the whole country is over populated and cultivated.

jejudo is the best place in all ...

Hanhwa Eagles baseball game

I recently attended a hometeam baseball (yagoo) game here. The hometeam are the Hanhwa Eagles and the opposing team were the Doosan Bears. I had a lot of fun, especially since the Eagles beat up on the Bears 7-2. Okay maybe "beat up" isn't the right word, but you get what I mean. I was really missing baseball since I've been away from Cleveland, so this was just what the doctor ordered ...

On the Airplane to South Korea

On the plane talk: If this is any implication of what is to come, I am extremely happy. For one, the Flight Attendants are beautiful. All of them in traditional Asian "gowns," for lack of the real term. And two, they are extremely friendly and treat their customers top notch. I am really impressed. So, I was sitting here watching The Dark Knight on the little mini tv's on board on the seat back.Noticed everyone opening there windows and looking outside, so ...

... as many weeks, things, I sense, are starting to normalise. That's good, obviously, but doesn't make sense considering there are over twice as many teachers here now as there were last week and Meg and I no longer share the task of managing just a single camp with 15 teachers. Nope, between the two of us we're now tending to 4 camps, camp 2, 3, 4 & 5 of the 10 we'll have managed by the time we leave here at the end of the ...

It's All Uphill From Here

... to enforce are broken, a dry one. For a New Years Eve that's just wrong. Plain and simple. · Thank you Cornwall & Wicklow Christmas isn't over yet. We received cards and another Christmas parcel from Canada today. It cheered us up and reminded us again that it's still Christmas week, something you easily forget here with the non-festive feel and general madness around the place. So thanks everyone; much love right back to you all.

A strange Christmas

... 5th largest city. The trip included a stop off for dinner, a fruitless search for a coffee shop (any coffee shop) and a late night visit to COSTCO, the last place either of us expected to find ourselves at 10pm on any Christmas Eve. The night just continued to get stranger and was rounded off by sharing a sweet-potato flavoured Christmas cake (Korean style - with chopsticks) and the contents of a slab/24 of Budweiser (the ...

Outpost CKW2007

· Jochiwon, South Korea · GMT +8:00 hours It's not supposed to be like this anymore We mailed some 9kg's of stuff the other day, so aren't our bags supposed to be manageable? Well, you'd never think so looking at us - two veritable piles of bags - making our way to Seoul's Express Bus Terminal yesterday afternoon. The culprits were our latest bag of laundry and a bag containing our shoes, two bags of stuff that would normally be in our main ...

Driving Away from Korea

... front of the line to pass laws for friends to receive something in return. This sounds strikingly similar to some circumstances involving the war in Iraq and Cheney. However in Korea it is simply understood that it will happen and something that doesn't have to be covered up.

Now arriving at Emart it would be necessary to park in the parking structure. The funniest thing is the people that flag you into the structure. There is usually one person in the road, one ...

Driving Away from Korea

... will pull up in front of the line of cars and wait past the line. This is so typical of Korean mentality. Why wait? If there is a way to cut to the front, do it. This is typically done by asking your network of people to help out. Professional drivers, taxis, are the most lawless. Even though they are low on the totem pole of success, they rule on the streets. They are similar to the politicians. According to Confucianism, the legal tradition developed for the ...

I'm a BLACK BELT!

... I swear -, Koreans were not allowed to practice martial arts. However, during this time, Koreans were taken to Japan to be sold or used in the army.

Hapkido starts with the story of one man being taken to Japan at this very time - see there was a reason for the detailed historical setup. Choi Yung-Sul (in Korean the family name is first and the persons name is the second part - most people have only 3 names that are 3 syllables - so my name being 5 is strangely long and ...
