... After checking into our hotel, an ex monastery, we went on a walking tour of Brugge with a local guide. She was very good. There are 23 churches in this small town. There is a river that runs through the centre of town. A very pretty place that is steeped in history, dry much like the rest of Europe, I imagine. The city has the headquarters for NATO the Eu. There are 1.5 million people. Buildings are comprised of both modern and old. Some 300 years old. There is a very significant class distinction. The king is Phillipe and the Queen is Matthilda. Then from Belgium into ...

... Anne had highly recommended the canal cruise, with the tip to do it in the morning when it wasn't so busy. So we took a right and then a right again and that found us at the ticket booth. I wasn't sure if that was the right time to do it, as it was raining, albeit not heavily. But, as Mum rightly pointed out, we didn't know how the day was going to turn out. It could clear, but it could also get worse. So we bought our tickets - and a poncho for Mum ...
