Our last full day in Mar Del Plata

A travel blog entry by jsquaredgoesto on Nov 01, 2015

We woke up late again this morning, it must be all the walking up hills and fresh ocean air. We were up before Martin and Cecilia though, so we walked down to the beach and looked at the booths at the feria - there were a few more vendors, but nothing caught our eye. We headed out in the car around noon, heading south to see Mar Del Plata's iconic lighthouse. We drove by and then stopped at a public beach to dip our toes in the water - it was cold, ...

... and they created a pineapple daiquiri - it was great. We ordered several empanadas, and Martin received a text from a couple he knew from Buenos Aires who we had run in to earlier. They came and met us at the restaurant and we had a nice time chatting. After a few hours there, the other couple left, and we headed to an artisanal beer pub not too far away. We chatted some more and walked back UP to the hotel around 2am to turn in for the night. Another great day in ...

We were up early this morning to get ready to head to Mar Del Plata. Martin texted around 11am that they were on their way from his apartment so we headed out to the street. Quickly packed our bag in the back and headed to the highway. The trip to Mar Del Plata was about 400 kms and we passed through a few toll booths - mostly inexpensive, but the roads were good. The scenery is so much like home. If the billboards were in English I would of thought we were ...

This has been a wind down day with general relaxing and exchanging addresses. At the 0745 wake up call it was already 25 degrees so the days are definitely getting warmer. It is now time to pack away the cold weather clothes and brace for high temperatures. One particular presentation today was really inspiring. It was an honour to listen to Laurie Dexter, the team historian, talk about the first group to walk/ski across the Arctic. ...

Heading south we spent a night in Mar del Plata, another large city on the coast. Nothing special about the town except it is the second largest beach town in the country and does indeed have a very wide beach that was crowded even as the sun was setting. It's surrounded by very flat, very fertile farmland. What strikes me most is how little we know about this country. Seems like people either live in huge cities or in very isolated, tiny villages.
