The day before we landed in Poland, there was a massive storm. So big, it washed out a good chuck of it's national railway. This lead to a bit of a dilemma. How to get to Kamienna Góra. After a hour of frantic phone calls, Anita's relatives decided that it was best to catch the train, then it'd bypass the damaged parts by bus, then we'd be back on our journey. Ahhh, all sweet.
Once again, we were late to rise, and it made for a hectic hour ...
Jelenia Góra ('deer mountain') is about couple of hours south from Wroclaw (trains or buses). It is close to the Karkonosze mountain range running along the Polish-Czech border. Only 10-15 km of the town there are few ski resorts such as Karpacz, Szklarska Poreba.
Nice, colorful Market Square, Cyprian Kamil Norwid Theatre, Saint Cross Church, the Old Town are just few places worth of seeing.

... little tent (and man, do I mean little) is not only really really little, but it is also really waterproof. And I can honestly say that it is actually a decent tradeoff. But actually, my whole point is to answer a question that has come up a few times: What am I reading when I stretch out at night in our really really teeny tine tent? I find that good books are like gold when traveling. Despite their weight, I try to always have at ...
Teplice, Bohemia, Czech Republic steffeff... najpierw 1 krok do przodu, np. powie mi cos osobistego, a potem 2 do tylu - np. caly dzien mi dokucza.
Szklarska Poreba, Western Poland, Poland bogna... we were rewarded with terrific views on both sides, particularly down into a valley on the Czech side near the mountain resort town of Pec Pod Snezku. By the time we reached the summit it was quite cold and the clouds had gathered so we couldn't see a thing. However, as with many Polish mountains there was a restaurant there which gave us a chance to sit down and have a bite to eat in relatively warm surroundings. Luckily enough, within 10 minutes the clouds had parted, revealing the ...
Karpacz, Western Poland, Poland will9/10/07 Day 71 Today we travelled into the Czech Republic to a town called Trutnov just across the boarder near the alps. it's a cold day but the roads were gratefully uneventful and we arrive in the afternoon. Having no currency we headed off to find a bank and the shops, we get out 2000 Zakona and only get 2 notes, the problem is we have no idea what the exchange is, and can only guess. We do the shopping for just over 1000z and wonder if it was a ...
Trutnov, Czech Republic rob.jennWith most of my more recent trips involving city after city, I felt I was long overdue for a mountain trip. I can't remember how I first heard of them, but the mountains in the Gory Stolowe National Park, near the Czech border had been on my list of places to see ever since I first came Poland, and given they were only two hours drive from Opole and glorious weather was forecast for the weekend I knew the time had come. Hiring a car for the day, I ...
Gory Stolowe National Park, Poland willJanuary 26 Finally after the long and crowded bus ride (where I stood the whole way), we arrived slightly tired in Trutnov and went to her father's place. We cooked ourselves a decent meal and relaxed a bit, danced some valse and watched animations until pretty late by night... then it was time to sleep! ---------- January 27 Again waking up slowly and finally kicking ourselves to go out, we picked the skis and went to the ...
Trutnov, Czech Republic maplefanta... iconography of the American 60's prevailed. Details of Czech life under communism: a banana for Christmas; work or jail; slander Stalin- go directly to Siberia do not pass Moscow do not collect vodka; wait 3 hours for a loaf of bread on Friday from 5 am, children collecting brochures from a tractor dealership because they're printed in color; and be a good communist and you may receive more bananas or perhaps just a b&w poster of bananas.
Trutnov, Czech Republic markszulgit... had signals and grunting, I have regressed to cave man status. It has been a long day of travelling and everything is closed anyway so I have a long hot shower and go to bed. The next morning I find the trail information center and get a map, the trail starts not far from where I am staying so off i go map in hand. As it turns out the trail is very well marked and is very easy to hike. I am pretty much alone on the trail I see only a couple of people. It is very quiet and ...
