Another amazing place that we visited was an Open Air Museum at an area called Goreme. Apparently Paul (he of the Letters to the Corinthians, etc) decided that Goreme was a good place to train missionaries in the 4th Century. There is some geological explanation involving volcanic erruptions, erosion, etc but the end result is the weirdest landscape of soft rock that can be easily carved with a hard-rock ...

... but with the cloudy, misty weather, the impact was not as striking as it would have been on a clear day. ... a lighthouse. From there we got great views across the Gulf of Antalya but unfortunately the mountains were covered with clouds. Then on to the lovely crescent shaped harbour with it's mix of old fishing boats, tourist boats, and modern yachts. Up the hill through the souvenir shops we walked to the Yivli Minare Mosque which was built in the13th century. It has an elegant fluted minaret and is the towns symbol.

... and salad. The hungry us just gobbled everything down.

We then headed to the old city of Side. Wow turkey really has many of these old cities remains that are still sorta standing and it's just lovely to walk amongst them! We hit the sea front right in front of the Apollo temple where we watched the lovely sunset with Apollo temple (or what is left of it) behind us.

What a nice way to end the leisure ...

Ruins Galore: Perge & Termessos

... all a while to decide exactly what we were going to do on Sunday, but thanks to the generosity of the hostel manager, we were able to get a reasonably priced ride to Termessos. The drive took about 30/45 minutes & it led us up an expansive mountain (Güllük Dağı). This exploration required more hiking than the day before, but I thought that added to the overall experience of it. It put into perspective how the Greeks & Romans had to ...
