    I woke at 4am but dozed from 6 to 8am when there was a rush to get to breakfast to be ready to leave at 9am. I really enjoyed the breakfast of croissants, fresh fruit and tea.
    This area was devastated by a huge earthquake in 2009. The epicentre was right here in the area where we are staying. Nearly 300 died and many buildings were damaged beyond repair. The nearby town of Fossa remains mostly empty. Derek walked through it and said it is very sad. ...

    ... while Derek, Gerry and Neil walked up to an old castle above the monastery. Our room is basic But comfortable with a mezzanine floor where we sleep.Derek dropped the soap in the shower and had to open the door and get out to retrieve it.
    We met at 7pm for drinks and a four course dinner was served at 8pm. Beautiful antipasto of local product, pasta, pork with potato and a cake slice. All very good fun as usual.
    Bed by 10.30.

    ... conditions would not sustain the animals for the winter. They have a varied farm with grain and vegetable crops, cows, sheep, and a variety of birds--ducks, swans, chickens and guinea fowl. Although shepherds do most of the work managing the animals, they also have a large contingent of Maremma sheepdogs who protect the sheep from the wolves in the area.
