Cuckoo Clocks and Waterfalls

Triberg is a town in the Black Forest that is known for cuckoo clocks and a beautiful waterfall: http://www.visiting-germany.de/triberg. html On our way home from the air show we took a slight detour to visit. We hiked to the waterfall and took some great pictures. It was fun to see ...

A nice detour

We caught the wrong train and wound up in Gengenbach. While we were waiting for a train back we met a lady who told us the town had a beautiful old-town section. So we went discovering again. After a good look around we stopped at a pub while we were waiting for the next train and got talking to the owner. Turns out he'd been to Australia on holiday, so we had a good time talking to him until it was time to go.

Glassblowing factory

Day trip from Villingen. Wolfach has a factory cum tourist attraction where they blow the glass manually. It was good to watch them making vases etc. in the traditional way. The highlight for me was dobbing Roz in to get up on the stage and blow her own vase. She did a good job, and we bought the vase and brought it home. A very special souvenir.

Cuckoo clock country

... whole process to us. Also went for a walk up the path that follows Germany's highest waterfall. Saw the worlds largest working cuckoo clock. It's literally the size of a house. So many woodcarving shops in this town. We caught a bus to another local town that has a clock museum. Some amazing gear in there.

Very small town

... Got the wobbly boot on after a few after-dinner beers and a couple of Jagermeisters. Strolled around town for a while just looking, and happily never lost my footing in the snow or on the ice covered footpaths. Did do a couple of tap dances, but didn't go down.

... with costumes and masks and bands. Damn near froze standing still for that long, but I had a good vantage point for the pictures so I wasn't going to move for fear of losing my spot. After the parade we got stuck into the gluhwein and some hot food then went back to the hostel for a hot shower, then out for dinner. We went to a local brewery that had a restaurant incorporated and had such a good time that we made it a regular while we were there.

Triberg, World's Biggest Cuckoo Clock

Triberg was cute the minute we pulled into the small town. Cuckoo clock stores were everywhere and the "i" was super easy to find! So, we parked and Layton and Jana went to find a place to stay. We left the parents at the shopping. Before we walked out of the store, Jim & Willa Jana AND Judy had bought clocks and were shipping them home! WJ and Jim had to carry the weights for the clock they bought!!! Crazy! The ...

Black Forest

Today Uncle Mike took Kevin and I to the Black Forest. The Black Forest in one of the best known regions on Germany. It is 125 miles long and almost 40 miles wide. We headed to Triberg which is one of the most representative cities of the Black Forest region. Of course when we got into Triberg it started RAINING!!!! Did we ...

... stopped us because she had just mopped and seemed to be closing. But she waved us in and had us stand behind the counter. We asked her if we could have some black forest cherry cake. She then handed us the entire cake, and then a strawberry pie and raspberry pie. She asked if wanted our picture taken with the cake/pies, and so she did. As we were deciding what we wanted she threw some cherry tarts and a cinnamon croissant in a bag and handed them ...

... of time to take it easy. We didn't want it to get dark, and we had to make sure we caught the train back to Offenburg so that we got the last train back to Strasbourg, and caught up with the trams before they closed at midnight. In order to do this comfortably, we planned on catching the 9:15 train to Offenburg, and then the 11:00 train to Strasbourg. That would give us plenty of time for the layover and to make sure that everything went ...
