Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina

... a creamy chicken soup) and a mixed grill kind of entrée suggested by the waiter called “Bosnian Plate”. It was an assortment of succulent chicken, cevapci and stuffed cabbage. Very tasty. The waiter also was suggesting a salad, but Craig jumped in and cut off the waiter and suggested we share a Shopska Salad. Supposedly they are very good in Bulgaria where Craig ate them a few years ago, but here in Bosnia it was loaded with strong onions! Next ...

Sarajevo Love Affair

... have to keep yourself from trying to imagine what it must be like for a beautiful small town like this to be under constant seige.

Some facts about the war that were shared at the museum were distrubing because of their simplistic yet highly important effects. Balconies were turned into gardens to grow simple foods for survival (going out was not an option because of sniper fire), cigarettes were the most widely used form of 'currency'. Anything could be procured if ...

15-DAY BALKANIZING, LOOKING FOR... ?

... screens waiting for the signal 'customer online' while baby cries in the next room and Grandma tries to calm him. Sarajevo has a well-defined tourist area in the 'Turkish quarter', with plenty of budget accommodation, so I may move in closer if Internet stays down here. It's not exactly Khao Sarn road there yet, but that's good. I have to decide today whether to stay on or bail out, or at least I feel that way anyway. How can I travel ...

Sarajevo

... Sarajevo was going to be like. We obviously had the images from the war 15 years ago that seemed to dominate our thoughts. We were pleasantly surprised upon our arrival to see what kind of city Sarajevo really is. Sarajevo has about 400,000 people that all seem to migrate into the old town at some point during the day. The centre has this buzz about it that gives off an amazing vibe. It feels very alive as we walked down the pedestrian streets filled with cafes and ...

Crossroads of East and West

... s Prague Factor: I had heard wonderful things about Sarajevo since beginning my trip, but I have to say, it didn't do a lot for me. Clearly, I enjoyed it more than some of the larger, dirtier capitals of eastern Europe, but my companions and I rather felt that it was a small old town and then just a bunch of apartment blocks, not really having a lot of character. Historically, it's definitely worth a visit, but I can think of many other places I would rather linger. 43%.

Trouble a-brewin'

... our visit had friends or relatives that were murdered or had parents or children who fought to defend the city whilst others fled. Our own history tour operator who was 12 to 16 yrs old through the siege told us about how he regularly bicycled across the city carrying 50L of water (from the city's only fresh water source, the brewery). This was no insignificant task as there were snipers camped out in the hills, missiles falling and unexploded ordnance ...

I had two days in Sarajevo. First day I meet two English guys Ed and Luke who were taking a tour of the city that morning. S I thought I tag along. It was a interesting tour mainly for the guide who obvious gone though it first hand. Type of man you wouldn't want to get the wrong side of. Saying that most Bosnian men look pretty dam right tough. Later ...
