We had booked an Etna tour before we left home, and I was hoping it was going to be ok. We hadn't used any of the cruise shore trips and I was dreading a day of standing in line with hordes of retiree age cripples shuffling about. Anyway, it was bloody awesome. The drive is like ...

... upstairs once we were on the ferry to take photos...ferry takes about 15 minutes to go from the mainland to Sicily. Back down and now we are travelling west out of Messina for Taormina. Onto the freeway and out we go for 45 minutes, off the right ramp and now to find our hotel on a mountain top without an accurate address. Just to say Larry was surprised and pleased he didn't have to bend his mirrors in going down streets which ...

... It was great to get a feel for the way pumice and obsidian, two of the products from the Islands' volcanic history, were traded over 5000 years ago. Obsidian is dense, glass-like and black, and was used for arrowheads, knives, etc. There's some lovely jewellery here incorporating obsidian. Pumice was Lipari's major industry and it has been exported for numerous uses around the world. The other real surprise here at the Museum was the world's most complete collection of ...
