As I sit in my house in Costa Rica, I read about Thailand: its geography, culture, and people. I am struck by how similar it is to Costa Rica and yet how different. The climate and geography seem to be much more like Costa Rica than the US. On the other hand my impression is that the culture is very different than both countries I have lived in. After a 16 hour bus ride from Panama we arrived in San Jose, Costa Rica. Crossing the border turned out to be a pretty painful experience. We arrived at immigration at 6am where we had to wait for an hour for it to open. Next everyone's bags had to be unloaded from the bus and we all had to go in to a room where some were searched and sniffer dogs were let loose among them.
