Gruss
Ralf
Berat, Albania schwate... and sometimes struggle to start.

The ride is very bumpy but shows how rural population lives. Most people have used their yards as gardens, growing grapes, corn … Many buildings are half built. Effigies are common but can't tell what they are for. Deserted factories. Trash everywhere. Concrete military bunkers are all over the strategic locations (eg, town entrances, hills, bridges). I am taking photos from the bus but ...
Berat, Berat, Albania will.traveller... another coastal resort in Montenegro. I stayed in an awesome little hostel, the Hippo Hostel, and that afternoon caught a bus into the mountains so I could visit the old capital, Cetinje. The town was rather small for an ex-capital but housed some quaint old churches and political buildings. All in all there wasn’t much to do so I read more on Pablo Escobar (finished the biography today) and pondered what it would be like to be the worlds most powerful criminal.
In ...
Berat, Albania bradskey69... the city was nicknamed "City of Stacking Windows". To walk inside them was quite an experience too; the narrow, steep and winding alleys are cool and dark, and lo and behold I found they still use donkeys to transport heavy stuffs where cars cannot enter. Another thing this city is famous of is its citadel on a low hill top, which, at 2400 years of age, is the oldest inhabited citadel in Europe.

I spent two days there, stayed in the apt of a PCV (another fringe ...
Berat, Albania chan_hc... the locals were. They loved Scott, and therefore, loved us too. The kids outside the hostel would come and look for us to play with everyday, and the people in the area would wave and talk to us even though they knew we couldn't understand them.

Berat is a really fun place, and I think Scott was wise to choose it as a place is an up and coming hotspot on the Eastern Europe Gringo Trail.
Berat, Berat, Albania maamI woke up at around 6:30. I can never sleep these days for that long I dont feel I need that much sleep. I strolled around town taking in some of the sights. There is not that much to do in Tiranna itself really but it is quite a nice little city and its compact which is the main thing and you feel safe all the time. I set off from the backpackers at around 9ish armed with a map of the city and the ...
Berat, Albania richardcowley... heading south to Sarande. I had been told the previous day that a Sarande-bound bus left around 10am every morning, so I figured that 9:30am was early enough to show up at the bus "station". Wrong. (Cue quiz-show style buzzer.) The bus had already left by then and there weren't any more until the next day. Instead I got on a bus heading west to Vlore, where I was told I'd be able to catch a bus to Sarande that afternoon.
Berat, Albania laura1... Bulgaria vs. PC Albania. In general the PCVs here seem a closer bunch, they party together and date eachother more than we do. And it seems the problems they have working with Albanians are similar to ours but in a more extreme form - mainly apathy. Anyway Katie and I went home around 1 AM and fell asleep in the heat - thank goodness she has a fan. PS: my camera batteries died just as I was going to the citadel, so all the photos of Berat in this entry are from Katie.
Berat, Albania mary_zell... part of the Roman province of Macedonia, later being incorporated into the province of Epirus. In the civil war between Pompey and Julius Caesar it supported the latter, but fell to Marcus Iunius Brutus in 48 BC. The later Roman emperor Augustus studied in Apollonia in 44 BC under the tutelage of Athenodorus of Tarsus; it was there that he received news of Caesar's murder. Apollonia flourished under Roman rule ...
