Antigua & Lake Atitlan

Yippeeee - another trip begins :o) Flying out of Heathrow today!!!

Arrived OK at 12.30am (although my brain was still in English time so it was really 6.30am!!), hostel seems nice, all private rooms, no dorms, so I went straight to bed in my single room with en-suite and TV!!

Friday 12th - Woke up at around 6am (brain now thinks its midday!?!), couldnt go back to sleep so lazed around until a decent hour and then went to see what happens in Antigua. Quite a nice city - feels m...

Antigua

It's easy to pass the time in Antigua. It's a beautiful colonial city with cobblestone streets surrounded by dramatic scenery, lush mountains and the Pacaya volcano. There seem to be cafes everywhere you look and you can't go wrong with the coffee or postres (cakes and desserts) in this city. We spent the day blissfully strolling the streets mooching round the local markets and shops in between sampling the local café scene. The most common antiquity here is jade and hand woven textiles. I th...

So it begins

Gil and Tracy meet up at my place and we take a taxi to Newark. To get on our direct flight to Guatamala City. When we arrive we take a shuttle immediatly to Antigua which is about an hour away and check into our hotel Casa Rustica. We spent some time wandering around the main square / street and scoping out places. We headed back to the hotel to regroup and book a trip to the Pacaya Volcano the next day. We went to dinner at an upscale guatamalan restaurant and I had the cheese fondue and a ...

Off to the Pacaya volcano

We got off to a relatively late start to wander around the city. Ended up getting an amazing western breakfast at a nice breakfast and then killed an hour or two in some sort of convenant not sure what the place was. We then headed to pacaya which is about a 1.5 hour drive. We bought walking sticks for 50 cents and then headed up a great hike through the mountains to the volcano for 3km. We ended up at the volcano which looked like a black alien landscape. We climbed up further up the jagged ...

Albuquerque to Antigua

Buenas Tardes from Antigua, Guatemala! This is a test blog, as it is the first one I have done. In future blogs I hope to have pictures, just figuring that part out, too. We left Albuquerque, New Mexico 1/19/08 and hopped to Phoenix, then LA, arriving in Guatemala City, Guatemala at 0530 1/20/08. Our guide book advised that the safest way to Antigua is by shuttle, but discouraged going at night, or in the dark. We stepped out of the airport expecting to see shuttles, but what we saw instead w...

Market Day

... the market which opened up into a labyrinth almost as soon as you broke away from the main street. It was never ending corridors covered over with sheeting to protect us from the beating sun selling almost everything that we had seen already but in quantities that put the other markets to shame. It was a mixture of textures, wooden masks, leather products, authentic clothes, local foods, tourist souvenirs and everything that goes in between such as second hand trainers ...

volcano climbing

... Back at the hotel they sat on the roof terrace, had another beer and looked at the stars, hope the volcano doesn´t erupt tonight thought Mac, not sure if the insurance will cover it. All that is dangerous and left to do is ride a horse, maybe tomorrow. Mac Oh one more word, don't worry about the gun the guide carries with him as he escorts you up the mountain, it's to shoot any French, not to protect you from the bandits that sometimes attack tourists!

Midafternoon murders and meeting up with friends

... a spanish fit of anger, cursing, hissing, and almost snarling when the driver assured me he'd take what I gave him and made do with the manager. We still tipped him when we got to Antigua, he did almost breakneck speed to get us there and rest assured we'd not gotten there faster any other way. But already trying to get jipped and we just got here. Ah. Take me to Antigua to see Jess and Lisa. Ended up at the Monoloco, waited for the girls to have a Gallo...oh wait, that was Gallo II ...

A week of ups and downs

Hi everybody since I have last written plenty and nothing has happened. I have submitted photos from my last entry however not all including videos which I really wanted to share, however it takes so long to upload I have lost patience. I wrote in the last entry that we were making our way to Livingston after arriving in Puerto Barrios. This town, a shipping town was something from a nightmare. I suppose I was not shocked after I have travelled ...
