Friday 12th - Woke up at around 6am (brain now thinks its midday!?!), couldnt go back to sleep so lazed around until a decent hour and then went to see what happens in Antigua. Quite a nice city - feels m...
It's easy to pass the time in Antigua. It's a beautiful colonial city with cobblestone streets surrounded by dramatic scenery, lush mountains and the Pacaya volcano. There seem to be cafes everywhere you look and you can't go wrong with the coffee or postres (cakes and desserts) in this city. We spent the day blissfully strolling the streets mooching round the local markets and shops in between sampling the local café scene. The most common antiquity here is jade and hand woven textiles. I th...
Antigua Guatemala, Western Highlands, Guatemala gareth.alannaGil and Tracy meet up at my place and we take a taxi to Newark. To get on our direct flight to Guatamala City. When we arrive we take a shuttle immediatly to Antigua which is about an hour away and check into our hotel Casa Rustica. We spent some time wandering around the main square / street and scoping out places. We headed back to the hotel to regroup and book a trip to the Pacaya Volcano the next day. We went to dinner at an upscale guatamalan restaurant and I had the cheese fondue and a ...
Antigua Guatemala, Western Highlands, Guatemala jack2312We got off to a relatively late start to wander around the city. Ended up getting an amazing western breakfast at a nice breakfast and then killed an hour or two in some sort of convenant not sure what the place was. We then headed to pacaya which is about a 1.5 hour drive. We bought walking sticks for 50 cents and then headed up a great hike through the mountains to the volcano for 3km. We ended up at the volcano which looked like a black alien landscape. We climbed up further up the jagged ...
Antigua Guatemala, Western Highlands, Guatemala jack2312Buenas Tardes from Antigua, Guatemala! This is a test blog, as it is the first one I have done. In future blogs I hope to have pictures, just figuring that part out, too. We left Albuquerque, New Mexico 1/19/08 and hopped to Phoenix, then LA, arriving in Guatemala City, Guatemala at 0530 1/20/08. Our guide book advised that the safest way to Antigua is by shuttle, but discouraged going at night, or in the dark. We stepped out of the airport expecting to see shuttles, but what we saw instead w...

... over, and for three days we celebrated the success of the project. The entire first day was to give thanks to God, and the next two days were just happy revelry! Which included two nights of dancing till midnight as I was passed from arm to arm of one good friend to the next (sometimes trembling) hand. The development committee in charge of the project was happy to recount that for every person that arrived (and there were thousands!) they ...
3 Cups of Guatemalan Coffee: You're Building 2 Schools !!, Quiché, Guatemala lamonafeliz... have nothing, because you cant take someones faith away and its not as if these blessings are free but thats for another story.<br>After getting something to eat from the food stalls we made our way back to the high street, constantly dodging street vendors trying to sell us over priced bus tickets with the "professional" bus companies before the next chicken bus sped down followed by a ploom of smoke and we and are bags were pulled on board and on to the next destination of Antigua.
Chimaltenango, Guatemala elrigster... us celebrate Brittany's 21st birthday. There are 16 of them staying in a famous writer's house less than 50 yards from ours. We went swimming, listened to music, and played card games under the tiki hut for the majority of the night. The highlight of the night was seeing one of the active volcanoes spew magma. The skyline was dark but we could see in the distance red magma coming out of one of the many active volcanoes in Guatemala. It was an awesome night!
Antigua Guatemala, Western Highlands, Guatemala claudiv... crazy time around here. Last week I borrowed Rob's Lonely Planet for Central America (on a shoestring) and started to do some really general thinking about how I'm going to conquer Southern Mexico to Nicaragua. Also figured out that money will be tight, or at least considerably tighter than I expected. Just to remind you, I'll be taveling through Southern Mexico, Belize, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua and spending some more time here in ...
Antigua Guatemala, Western Highlands, Guatemala jaynichvolodov... way to Antigua, an old style touristy city just outside Guatemala city. We had a relaxing day to celebrate Eimears birthday with some market browsing and shopping, a big barbeque, some violent card games, lots of charades and plenty of holiday rum. Of course we had our new camera in action now too so we were pretty happy supertramps. The following day we had an early start to climb the nearby volcano Pacaya which was incredible. There had been a small eruption eight days ...
