Voyage to the North

... and wandered down to visit the pigs...now, I know that pigs are large, but I have NEVER seen a pig as enormous as the one they have - 900 some odd pounds! She is lovely though, but quite rotund, shall we say. There is a brook at the back of the property that is quite nice, and there is a spot deep enough for swimming. On the way back towards the house, we saw the beautiful horses, and very friendly and persistent donkey. Unfortunately, my allergies were ...

A Surprise Visit

... guys, who actually lives in New Jersey, offered to go up with him. It was funny, because clearly no one thought he would jump - after he walked away, there was a chorus of, "Look! The gringo is going up to the cliff! Snicker snicker snicker.." Shen is definitely not one to show off, but the poor expectations made it totally necessary, so he did a back flip off a 35-foot cliff. The group made several comments about how the gringos never jump, they had ...

Fancy-Pants on the Cheap

... seen. They almost have a strip-mall feel to them - shop after shop, power cables criss-crossing the street all over the place, and no real center. There's nothing pretty about them. The towns we've seen do have a Plaza Central, but life doesn't seem to revolve around it as it does in many places. I can't seem to find the town's anchor. One thing that does give a sense of character is that everyone is out on ...

More rain.....

... a small pig, complete with his or her head - Leanna saw it too later and said it looked like Babe. My dad took a picture of it on my camera but I don't even want to look at it again and I don't think I'll be posting it here - I don't want to glamourize this disgusting image in any way. There was also stewed goat for dinner, at the buffet, among many other daily varieties of dead animals, but when you see a pig's head and body laying on a counter ...

The land of "Beyond" and fun at the beach

... a hot and sunny day - great beach weather! We went to the small beach that wasn't so busy - all yellow sand and the water was clear and turquoise - just fantastic. No seaweed! (or anything else yucky in the water) I'm proud of myself too as I went in the water the WHOLE WAY (unlike my last two warm weather beach vacations in L.A. and Australia, where I thought the water was too cold and just stepped in.). I couldn't get enough of the water. Leanna ...

Windy Cabarete

... Plata is eactly as I left it 3 years ago. Entire familes are still being transported on small motoconchos complete with their weekly flock of chickens. As soon as our feet touched base in Cabarete we rushed to the beach for the final section of the PKRA (world cup for kiteboarding). The wind was light but the pros were still able to perform some jaw-droppingly-amazing moves. That evening we ...
