Montañita is one of those places people find and never leave. It is in many ways similar to Vang Vieng, Laos (see my SE Asia blog) with the big difference of being located on a beach instead of a river. I may claim to be most interested in getting away from the crowds and exploring untrod paths, but I have to admit I often end up liking these tourist ghettos. Especially traveling alone, there's something to be said for spending some time with people with whom you share a language and culture ...
Montañita, Ecuador mistahallAft** a monumental screw up on my part in the form of me staying ov**night at the wrong t**minal in heathrow, i hotfooted it back to numb** 3 by taxi at the cost of 20 quid (was the middle of the night). So a little frazzled was i but had done the online boarding thing and all i had to do was drop of my bags. Got my boarding pass and off i went. The flight to madrid was pretty unremarkable, no meal, drinks or nowt. Howev** while going to the transit area in madrid i met an english couple also...
Galapagos Islands, Ecuador ramblingroisinDay 282 Monday 08/08/05 Quito - San Cristobal Island (Galapagos) We got a taxi at 7.30, flew at 9.30 and after a brief stop at Guayaquil and gaining an hour as we flew... we finally landed in Puerto Baquerizo Moreno on San Cristobal island in the Galapagos. We walked from the airport to our hotel (Chatham - avoid it) which denied any knowledge or our resveration and could only give us a very expensive roo .... funny that .... and they were just booking in a big group of Spanish speakers who w...
The Galapagos Islands, Ecuador skcollDay 290 Tuesday 16/08/05 Quito We had a little lie in and a late breakfast as we were both exhausted! We then caught a taxi to the base of the Teleferiqo. The Teleferiqo is a new cable car system (about 1 month old) which takes you up a hill overlooking the city. Quito is situated on a plateau surrounded by hills and volcanoes and this viewpoint gives you a lovely city overview and some nice views of the hills. The queues are huge and on an express ticket you have to wait about 1.5 hours befo...
Quito, Ecuador skcollNot sure how this write up is going to do the Galapagos tour justice - this place was probably on the top of both of our 'must see' lists and it didn´t disappoint... We spent 7 nights on a great boat were we managed to forget we were backpackers and were treated with 1st class service (and back to 3 big meals a day!). But it wasn't about the accommodation, it was all about the wildlife - it is there for you to literally trip over and get very close to. The sea life ...
San Cristóbal, Galápagos, Ecuador famkederksenBefore I jump into the awesomeness of the Galapagos Islands let me just make a recommendation. If you're ever thinking about going to the Galapagos Islands consider doing a land-based tour, meaning you physically sleep on the islands rather than by boat. Staying on the island means you have many more opportunities to do cool things on the island and the groups tend to be smaller. In our case we completely ...
San Cristobal, Galapagos Islands, Ecuador, Galápagos, Ecuador claraz8Day 4 - today we said goodbye to some of our passengers, who had booked the 4-day cruise, as opposed to our 8-day version. This meant going to San Cristobal Island, and getting away from the animals for a while whilst we explored the Galapagos Visitor centre, which explained the origins of the islands, its wildlife (endemic, native and introduced) and the environmental issues affecting the islands. The most dramatic of these was the impact of us as tourists, who now ...
San Cristóbal, Galápagos, Ecuador atullguptaTonight we sleep on San Cristobal....one of the main Galapagos Islands (in terms of human occupation anyway). We disembarked this morning and are now catching up on internet and laundry after a great cruise of the islands. The Millennium turned out to be quite seaworthy, if not as romantic as some of the other boats we encountered, served superb food, and made a good base for ...
Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, Ecuador travelshrewA short morning walk on this island, which was studded with giant cactus trees, and populated with green land iguanas (that actually were more of a pale brown colour than green). The iguanas eat the cactus fruit and flowers, so over the years, the cactus trees have evolved to grow taller and ...
