... walk around the crater lake not far from the volcano before a lunch stop then on to Baños, a small tourist town at the foot of the active volcano Tungurahua. A day of rest for us today, our guide Ana and driver, Eduardo. We could have chosen to do numerous active adventure type activities, but it was rainy so we decided to explore the town instead. Nice relaxing day. Next stop - ...

We began our day with a workout as always, and then headed out for a hike to the top of a huge mountain in Banos! Most people bus to the top, but of course we opted for the 2 hour vertical hike, naturally. We stopped at a cafe, a small village, and then finally at the top we made it to a swing at the edge of the world! There are two swings attached to ...

We rented bikes and biked down to the Devilīs Cauldron. Was mostly downhill, so it wasn't too bad. Took a lot of pictures and saw a lot of other waterfalls.

I had a blast at the Cauldron. Had fun climbing through the crevice and taking photos.

We had made grand plans for today, to scale the mountain behind our hostel and visit the thermal baths.

Our jelly legs from ascending the steps at the waterfalls yesterday put an end to any mountaineering however.

We did wander along to the thermal pools. They didn't quite live up to my mental picture of what they would be like. I imagined crystal blue pools, in a lush setting, with a soundtrack of birdsong. The reality was more like a lido that had ...

... we are used to, and the meat is tougher, pork however, was similar to back home and was just as tender and tasty.

At the end of the shopping spree, we headed to the outdoor grill area outside the fish market. We ordered 'lunch' of a fresh grilled fish of various types, salad, a grilled plantain and a drink; all for $4! The fish was cooked slowly over the charcoal coals, was moist and salted to perfection. It was a treat we looked forward to.
