Port City

We continue south to the important port city of Chetumal, which operates as Mexico's main trading gateway with its neighboring country of Belize. Goods are transported via a road connecting Chetumal with Belize City to the south, and also via coastal merchant ships.

Our stop was to visit one of the “Museum of Mayan Culture”, the biggest Maya museum in the Riviera Maya. Different sections of the museum represent Maya history, the Mayan interaction with nature, cities and ar...

Acapulco

Acapulco - 26th January 2008. Arrived to lovely hot sunny weather. The coach left at 9am to take us to see the Cliff Divers, excellent views from the local hotel however not long enough to appreciate their skills. Some good shots on the camera. Next Stop jewellery shops and unlimited drinks of beer, cocktails or soft drinks to encourage you to buy their wares. Dennis was persuaded to buy me a pair of earrings with the Mexican fire opal. (I was thrilled). We then travelled to the Princess Hote...

Chetumal...

Today Lonely planet miserably failed. I went to the address of a hostel they gave, and the place turned out to have closed years ago. So I had to spend the night in a kind of motel, the most expensive night for now.
That's because Chetumal really is empty. It is the capital of Quita Roo, but obviously Cancun and Playa del Carmen took all the region's ressourses. This town is not very big, has a ...

The day of missed buses.

... to the border and my brief consideration to take a taxi...we missed the 10:30 bus by about 10 minutes. We most certainly would have made it in a taxi. *sigh* Tacos it is. Finally the ADO bus pulled ...

Vapor Riding to Chetumal

... went ahead and the goal was for us to pass them and scout out the place described in the blog and then contact them with a long-range talkie-walkie (yeah the french say this backwards!). We stopped in a lunch at a great restaurant next to a lake where we met Glenn, who was traveling with her husband in their RV.  They had come from the UK and were coming from Belize and Guatemala - so they gave us their used maps of Guatemala and ...

Worst bus ride yet..all they have is school buses and it was the longest ride..not to mention the full on sunburn that just helped redefine pain for me...got to the border, crossed it and stayed for the night in some town...needed sleep...tomorrow off to Flores.

Beautiful Belize

... Monument When we got to Caye Caulker we managed to get on a dive for the next day. The dive consisted of 3 separate dives, the Blue Hole, Half Moon Caye Wall and Aquarium. All were fantastic but especially when we did the Blue Hole. At first I was a bit scared of doing the dive, especially as the boat next to us were feeding the sharks and all you could see we about 10 fins circling around. However once we descended it was like going into a ...

Serenity!

... but the effort will hopefully keep our regular readers entertained. It was sometime after 8:00pm when we rolled back to camp. There were no mayflies, as it was a bit too late for their swarming, which generally occurred between 6:00pm and 7:00pm. We were in bed literally moments after turning of the ignition to the van. 5:00am is when the sun rises in Corozal so it automatically became our new wake up time. Upon awaking, we watched another ...

Pickpocketed in the hole that is Belize City

... wallet is the only wallet I have ever owned, I've had that since sometime in middle school. It was totally falling apart and was extremely worn in. It was probably the best 15 bucks I have ever spent in my life. And now the poor guy is sitting in some dumpy alley in the hole that is Belize City. The whole stealing of my wallet sucked. What saved me is that I had my left over bank account from when I lived in Austin and I decided to keep some emergency ...

Pizza!

... 30am with no coffee. Anyway we found the pizza joint, Marcelo's. The pizza definately had lots of cheeze but that was about it so I only had one piece and it took quite awhile to get to us. After pizza I went off to find the local market. Since it was afternoon the market was almost empty but I got some bananas for breakfast then went back to the hotel to read for awhile. The day was fairly lazy but I did have a guy on a bike try to sell me a doll, then offer me some pot.
