Not long regarded a tourist haven, mainland Central America is still developing into a focal backpacker destination. Prices and safety are steadily on the rise, and indigenous culture and nods to their Mayan ancestry are prevalent in most areas. We flew from Quito to Lima, then Mexico City on to our final destination Cancun. We were greeted with sunshine and temperatures of 35 degrees. We all had very mixed emotions after leaving Quito but felt blessed that we were all safe. That could very easily have been us on that truck, we travelled on Cindy for 2 months.
