Arrived in Cambodia

We arrived in Phnom Penh airport and entered into the scrum which was passport control and immigration at the airport. We were surprised that nearly everything gets priced in US$ and that you can't change to or from Cambodian Riel anywhere outside of the country. I'm actually writing this on the 17th and have woken up at 2:45 this morning to watch the Arsenal v Cardiff match. Pretty over-powering performance, Cardiff didn't offer much but tailed-off as a match towards the end. The rain is com...

S-21 Detention Centre (Toul Sleng Prison)

Today, we have been to the infamous S-21 Detention Centre in Phnom Penh. They had tried to preserve as much as possible in the state that it was found. We were walking around and thought that we saw blood drops still there on the floor. We went into the interrogation room and into the individual holding cells. There were also room after room of photographs of the prisoners, because the Khmer regime was notoriously meticulous in documenting the people they were killing. There were also artisti...

Eating Khmer Spiders in Cambodia!

Hi!!!

We're in Phnom Penh in Cambodia now. We got here yesterday after a 7 hour bus trip! We were supposed to leave Ho Chi Minh City at 6 oçlock yesterday morning, but about 10 minutes into our journey to Cambodia we realised (well, Ferg did) that we left our passports at the hotel!!! So we had to make the bus driver stop and we had to go and get our bags and everything it was a nightmare! But we were lucky because there was another bus leaving at 8 oçlock, so we got here in the end.<...

Phnom Phen and the Killing Fields

Our bus ride from Siem Reap to Phnom Phen took 6 hours. Once again we did not have a place pre-arranged. We did do some research on line and Mark had a guide book for Cambodia but there were just too many hotels to choose from. We liked the look of one of the hotels we saw on line and decided to give it a try. So we overloaded a little tuk tuk with our 6 bags and headed off to the Cara Hotel. This hotel was just north of the main part of town and it looked almost too fancy for us. This hotel ...

The tuk tuk ride to the guesthouse was short. Once there we met Heather and Terry. After a brief catch up and getting settled into our room, we called it a night. The next day we were to meet the tuk tuk driver from the day before, Mr. Camera, downstairs at 9 to go out to the shooting range. We all had bfast, hopped in the ...

A Haunting Experience

... all of his friends due to the camp. most of the first people in the facility were powerful people such as Doctors, Teachers, etc. But then Pol Pot started taking people that were named by other captives.

Now a days in Cambodia, 50% of the population is under the age of 18, this is mainly due to the fact of the Khmer Rouge.

The second part of my trip was to visit the killing fields. These were not as bad as S21 due to the ...

I had begun to think it was mainly the way I was viewing the truck as a whole but I go away and come back and, as the SE Asians put it, it's all same same but different. It felt like it was time for some retail thereapy and some ice cream.

Anyway for my birthday meal we went to Friends restuarant which is a training place for young Cambodians who used to be street kids ...

The Capital City..

... up to Wat Phnom where, to be honest there is'nt much to see and the best things were the monkeys playing about (this in the middle of a busy roundabout). Returning to the hotel and after a quick power nap (tiring, this travelling business!) we watched 'The Killing Fields'- a film about the Khmer Rouge in the hotel.
The next day we get up rather late and take a Tuk-tuk into town. We end up at the Grand Palace, where we find out its closed 12 until 2 (this being ...

The next place I walked through was an open market. 'Through' isn't quite the operative word, as most of the hawkers had bagged a place on the ground to sell fresh fish, vegetables, meat and clothing ...
