... point of the La Serena area. If we did the area again, I would try and stay within the Elqui Valley, instead of staying in the main part of La Serena. The area is a huge agricultural area where they grow everything from avocados, grapes (for wine) and lettuce. The landscape turns from desert into lush green valleys, with little farming house sprinkled along the hills.

... as to why all the houses are bright primary colours. Another reason for this is due to the material they use to make the houses earthquake proof is not good with the humidity. Many artists have come to the city to create art work on the side of houses and buildings, making the city a very interesting place and colourful. The locals welcome the graffiti so as their house are not tagged by others.

I dumped my stuff and headed down to the bar where I received a welcome Pisco Sour from the barman who was also kind enough to make this from scratch and show me how – 250ml Chilean lemon juice, an entire bottle of Pisco, a shovel full of icing sugar and some ice – into a blender and voilà! He left me to sample his wares and trotted off to get me a cheese empanada – all very civilised.
