Orodara, December 26, 2008 - Friday

Some two hours later we came to a town called Orodara. There, at the local bus station, we had a welcome stop-over of some fifteen minutes. After two hours in an overcrowded bus, with more passengers than it should have taken in the first place – now I knew what those plastic vessels in the aisle were meant for: people were sitting on them – I guess we thoroughly deserved it. With so many bodies tightly packed aboard, I was literally melting with ...

Banfora, December 25, 2008 - Thursday

I liked it in Banfora. Some things didn't run like well-oiled, like breakfast this morning, for example, but was it so important? Not really, I'd say. Yes, I had ordered the breakfast the night before. And yes, they had promised it would be there for me on time. And it was. Except they informed me this morning they didn’t have eggs „for everything" we wanted. But the guy told me so in such an innocent way that I just couldn’t hold any grudges. That ...

Banfora, December 24, 2008 - Wednesday

Our return to Banfora in effect meant saying bye to Oumar and continuing our stay in town on our own. It was still quite early in the afternoon, so the first thing we decided to do was to have a lunch. In „McDonald" again. I was never big on experimenting with food and exploring places to eat. So as far as I was concerned, if „McDonald“ was fine once, it would certainly be fine again. And Naprisca didn't mind, either. So „McDonald“ it was.

After lunch ...

Tengrela, December 24, 2008 - Wednesday

Some say that Tengrela is a village and some say it's a town. I have no idea how they run it officially in the Burkinabe books. But if I am in my mind feeling particularly generous at granting Banfora the status of a town, then with allegedly just under four thousand inhabitants, Tengrela can only be a village for me. And it doesn’t look anywhere near like a town.

As for the lake itself, even if it’s not precisely what you may call a king size one, yes, it is a ...

Banfora, December 24, 2008 - Wednesday

Mornings in Burkina Faso are quite beautiful, in fact. If you wake up earlier, which I usually would, then the sun is not so high up and pounding everything in sight yet, and the air temperature is still in its lower twenties. Degrees centigrade, of course. And every hotel I'd stayed in so far either had a terrace or a yard garden. Later on only mad dogs and nutty European tourists would expose themselves. Everyone else, or everyone in their right mind, would runs ...

Banfora, December 23, 2008 - Tuesday

There was not much more to do in Banfora upon our return. Unless you count endless source of entertainment for me in simply watching the people pass by. Oumar dropped us off in front of the hotel, promising he would be back tomorrow morning when we would go to Tengrela lake. Naprisca wanted to have a shower right away and while she was at it, I went back out in the street and simply observed the street life.

I was still able to catch the last of the daylight. „Le Como ...

Karfiguéla, December 23, 2008 - Tuesday

Same as the taxi driver the day before in Bobo, Oumar had picked himself a companion to join us to Karfiguéla waterfalls. By the time Naprisca and I had finished our lunch and got to the car, they were both there, waiting for us. I suppose when you're stranded out of town with a couple of tourists who have inflicted themselves on you and then usually take their own sweet time along the way - after all, they pay for it, don’t they? - then that same time can hang pretty heavy ...

Banfora, December 23, 2008 - Tuesday

Bus to Banfora was full and it was by now obvious to me that here in Burkina Faso it made perfect sense to buy your bus ticket at least one day in advance. If you wanted to keep to your time schedule, I mean. As a white man, I stood pretty much out in the bus, but I was not all alone. There were three more ladies who'd been staying at „l’Auberge" the night before, same as Naprisca and me. Which was pretty much understandable since Banfora and surrounding area is considered a ...

July 17 Day 17 Bobo to Banfora and area

We had our petit dejeuner at Sanga Café again today. We chose to sit outside this morning because it was cooler outside than it was inside. We brought our laundry with us and a guy that Sanga knows got the laundry from the back of the vehicle and took it away to be laundered. In preparation for our sight-seeing today, Sanga thought that he should buy some new shoes. He called a guy over and he explained what he wanted and ...

Sud Burkina
