There was a lot of gondola traffic up and down the canals and it was very interesting to watch the movements of the gondoliers as they carefully avoided hitting the sides of the canals and even more importantly other gondolas!

... When the platform was finally announced 15 minutes before we were due to
leave the crowds all swarmed to the train…I was surprised by a ‘helpful Italian
lad who offered to lift my bag on to the train…as I followed him up the steps I
realised that he would be after a tip and I had no coins…he wasn’t impressed
