      Matala

... 3 feet in diameter at widest point. The ability to make these is perplexing to me. It obviously started on a wheel, but I wonder how it was finished and with what tools. The next interesting thing, is one of the oldest writings that remains unsolved. The writings are on a clay disc, known as Pheastos disc. Both sides are filled, but there are debates as what they mean. It ...

Today, I went on a short hike to the neighboring beach that is only accessible by boat or foot. The beach has red sand which is different. I have now been on brown, white, black and red sanded beaches. Along the cliff of both beaches in Matala, there are caves. Like other Cretan towns, Rethymnon has been
settled for hundreds or even thousands of years, but the fortress or Fortezza
dates from Venetian times, with the addition of a mosque by the Turks. By the
middle of the 19th century a large settlement existed on the hill,

A fantastic walk in the White Mountains

... The endangered Cretan wild goat, or kri-kri, is found in the park, and we saw several of them. There are signs telling people not to feed the goats, some of which hung round hopefully, looking very cute.

We finished the walk much more quickly than expected, even with numerous photo stops and pauses to admire the scenery. We found the meeting point in the village by the coast, and Dave and Tamara chilled out while Niall decided to climb a nearby hill to a ...
