Historical Traveler Reviews of Hotel California Santa Monica
Loved the Hotel Ca
from A TripAdvisor Member
I wanted to stay in Santa Monica, with value for money in mind. I was lucky to have found the Hotel California. Just about on Santa Monica Beach, the hotel is central to everything in downtown Santa Monica. My room was tastefully decorated and the bed the most comfortable I've experienced in motel accomodation.
The staff were friendly and helpful. The Hotel Ca is must for anyone wanting to experience Santa Monica without the need for exhorbitant room rates.
Absolutely Don't Stay Here

This place was extremely noisy and dirty. We had the sink backfilling up with dirty water from the shower upstairs and loud partying and banging music with drunk sounding people on the first night. We chaulked the noise up to being a Saturday night. What a mistake. My husband and I wish we had moved the very next morning but we toughed it out for three nights. Never again! "The only good thing was the down comforters. They were nice." The second day we had had No maid service at all. Now this place only has 26 rooms. How can you miss cleaning a room with only 26 rooms?
The list goes on from there and if you want an accurate detailed list of complaints, just read some of the other one star reviews. They are accurate.
When we checked out, they charged us for 3 nights, even though the desk manager and I discussed that I had credit for one night and should be charged for only 2 nights. When I realized what she had done, she said it had already been charged to AX and she couldn't do anything about it. "I would have to talk to the manager." From last Tuesday to today (the following Monday), I have called around 15 times. He is never there but she always promises that he will call me back ASAP. He has never called me! (He is always out doing errands!) -Not on my cell phone or at the hotel we stayed at for the rest of our trip nor at my home.
This place is a royal rip off. Don't stay here!

Filthy dirty, misrepresented by Fodor and AAA reviews
from A TripAdvisor Member
Made the mistake of accepting AAA and Fodor's reviews of this dump August 2003. They said recently renovated. Were told we were receiving 20% discount for AAA and time of stay. Ad said parking, reality, not enough for guest, spaces so narrow if park can;t exit veficle, advertised $9.00 a day park at thr front desk and then bill $15.00. Question and told too bad,go park elsewhere. Rooms filthy, dirty wood floors. NO AC and no screens in windows.Mold on shower and cracked shower tiles. Black mold on refridge gaskets, dirty towels put in rooms by maids, broken wall outlets.Bird droppings so thick on awnings outside windows you felt contaminated. Maid service poor and slow.Television had only 2 colors green and orange. Complained, nothing done about it.Phone went out and told too bad, you're leaving in a couple days anyways. THE WORST PLACE HAVE EVER STAYED, and if filth is what $200.00 a day gets you in Santa Monica,I say they deserve Anold and the fires. Is not "on the beach" and they do not have their own beach section as implied. A DUMP OF THE FIRST MAGNITUDE.....and awful ,if any service.I HAVE PHOTOS of everything,so I can't be accused of exaggeration.
Great experience all round

Fabulous decor, ambience, really helpful & friendly staff. Not a ... standard experience - if you can cope with some things being a little shaky, you'll love it.
Hotel California is terrible!!!
from A TripAdvisor Member
I booked my reservation through HOTWIRE unfortunately, so I couldn't change hotels without losing my money. HOTWIRE said the hotel was a three star hotel. What a joke!!!! First of all, the help is rude to the customers! When I told the clerk that the first room was unacceptable - the type of room you would expect in a one star (at best) hotel, he offered me another room at $20.00 more per night. There went the savings by booking through HOTWIRE. The second room window's do not lock, because they are broken, there is no air condition, it is a cute room at best, but far from a three star hotel room. And the noise from the street is terrible. Since my husband and I have already paid for it, we are stuck, unfortunately, but this hotel is overpriced for what they offer and the pictures on the internet do not give an accurate picture of the rooms!
Never never again

I should have read other reviews before book the hotel. It was a small, dirty and noisy hotel. It seems very often they have crazy guests shouting all night. The hotel clerk was very rude and not helpful. I was trying to write some reviews on their website and can't find any place to do so. They know they have terrible rooms. Lesson I learned is never trust the content on the hotel's website, check third place's review before booking.
Never again!!!

I was excited to stay at this Hotel. It looked cute and was reasonable.
It turned out to be terrible. We were woken up both mornings at 5:45 AM by noisy neighbors. The shower was clogged up...the room was sooooo small we kept tripping over each other. The saving grace was the pool at the Loews next door. I wish we had paid an extra $50 and stayed at a nicer place. This motel should cost no more than $99 a night.

I loved this place! So charming and well placed! The parking lot is a bit tight but the setting was worth it!
Hell- California-Style
from Feverpitch
Terrible. Old, not quite clean. Lost my reservation, then "found" a smaller room, for the same price, of course. Noisy. Absolutely no parking, unless you luck out for the $10 spaces (of which there are 12). Water in bathroom sink would not turn off. Not hair dryer, no iron in room. Miniscule shower- better be thin to use it!
