... to the KZN coast. After one or two hairy, scary wrong turns, we found the ferry in San Giovanni and made the 20 minute crossing to Messina in Sicily - very exciting to start the Sicily portion of our trip, if a little apprehensive, as I never know whether the places we book online will be habitable and remotely resemble their descriptions..... will report back soon..... Will also upload pics when I find free ...

... sand. I didn't go swimming so we tried looking for shops to get some souvenirs etc. it was mainly eateries and restaurants. Don was feeling like a hamburger so we tried this modern Italian bar/cafe. We had a bit more of a look at a store which was the first one we'd seen run by Asians. Back to Mammola ...

    Mammola day 1

We planned to head to the mountains in front of our accommodation after a walk around town to find Aunty Lisa's house. We followed our google map up very narrow, steep streets ...

Our next stop was a B&B at Le Canella Constrada Fratte II. Google maps said 4hrs 54mins and they weren't wrong. We lost some time trying to get on the right road then our journey took us through all the towns along the coast. It was like the Pacific highway 20 years ago. The seaside towns weren't as we imagined. They were very ancient and everyone has a siesta at 1pm. When we arrived near Le Canella we took a wrong turn which we thought was right and headed up into the hills. ...

    Ostuni

... panini with cheese and tomato. This is because they don't recognise "no carne" as including fish. Back onto the highway and when we past Bari it was like being in Dubai. Plenty of flat roofed apartments and they went for miles. Our impression of Bari that we had from the Discovery Italy book was of a quaint seaside town, no way it was huge. I was relieved that I'd booked accommodation outside of Ostuni as I didn't fancy negotiating the narrow hectic streets. ...
