Smokers, Spiced Specialties and Sleds in Nuremburg

I had less than 8 hours in Nuremburg, a city famed for its christmas market and war trials. My day of cultural curiousities was spent exploring the Germanisches National Museum, craft and food shops, and Bavarian restaurants. I loved the river view over the bridge and the beautiful bay windows in the old quarter.

... der Tauber so that went onto the Sunday itinerary. Today we walked all over the old city and up to the Kaiserburg -- the Imperial castle. We had lunch in a delicious restaurant called Zum Spiessgesellen, a restaurant serving traditional Franconian fare. And it was yummy! We walked a little more, shopped a bit and then went to a little café for coffees and a piece of Schwartzwald -- Black Forest cake. Then, a bit more of a wander before we came back to the hotel for a ...

... hall, which is decorated with beautiful frescoes. The story goes that the Prince Bishop owned all the land on the island and refused to let the city hall be built there. Someone noticed a sandbar in the river, and that is where the city hall was constructed on a base of pylons buried in the sand. Kitty-corner to the city hall is a blue house with white decorations in the rococo style which I thought was really lovely. As in the other cities we ...

... for it--best coffee she has had on the trip! Nuremberg was another town that was 90 percent destroyed during the war and decided to rebuild from the rubble instead of moving the city or leveling it and starting over--lots of newer construction with some of the old mixed in. Most interesting fact for the day--"rent a grave". When you die, you pay 500 euros for a ten year period to be buried in the cemetery. After the ten years, your relatives ...

    I'm a Princess!

Who would have thought that a traveler of limited means could afford a castle hotel? Well, Burg Colmberg made my princess dreams come true! The castle is just dreamy, from its thick walls and tower to its maze-like interior decorated with taxidermy and suits of armour. Our room had a beautiful view of the valley, even from the bathroom. The hotel restaurant offers venison from its own deer park. The staff were friendly and informative, and even let us take a look at the banquet hall. All in all, this stay was a dream come true!
