Quick update for the everyone before I head out. For the first three months of my service we'll be doing a community diagnostic collecting information and basically getting to know our communities to help to identify the future projects we'll be working on and possibly starting small projects. My community really wants me to start english classes right away so I will be jumping into that when ...

... language training M-F, however I'm not sure how well they're working out for me. The other day I was positive that ladder in english is spelled "laTTer" not "laDDer" and I spent 15 minutes looking up the word in my spanish dictionary wondering why they did not have the correct translation. I don't know if this is a good sign or a bad sign. Maybe by the end of my two years I won't be able to speak or spell in english or spanish and will only be able to mumble a strange incoherent ...

... of garbage, overlooked the Central Plaza. It was fun to watch the world of Jarabacoa go by from our bedroom window. We had another dinner of cheesy-fried-something-or-other, put in earplugs to battle the incessant merengue outside our window, and got to bed early.

In the morning we took off for a waterfall that was about 7 kilometers (maybe 4.5 miles?) outside of town. The motoconcho drivers couldn't believe that we ...

Wrapping Up the DR Swing

So we decided to visit the DR as a detour to our US based travel plan, and for good reason.  We wanted to catch up with our dear friends - the Trautweins and also let the kids see a world unlike any they would see as we visited historic sites on the East coast, natural parks in the Southwest and a mix of attractions up the West coast. We buffered the trip with some nice beach time on both sides.  Our stop in Santo Domingo has already been well covered in one ...

How I ended up with 13 stitches

... junglelike hills. I tried to take some photos, but the bumps in the road prohibited any high quality pictures. At the end of the steep road, we reached a school which served as our worksite for the day. There was a team of about six of us and we collected information on the families and distributed parasite medication. My job once again was to weigh and measure the kids under age five. However, in typical Dominican fashion, our effectiveness was limited by a ...

... a table, and buttons that were in the shape of a cross. They were the buttons that operated the lights to the light house, which lit up in a cross, but, per reports, when turned on caused black-outs to have the city. Considering the consequences long and hard, Steve, Brian and George decided against lighting up the clear blue sky, and went back down, happy just to have gotten to the top. And that, kids, is why you should never hire a tour guide. They got a taxi back to the ...

people to remember:

-Wandy (Joe's twin)
-Rowdy Rowdy Broudie (our waiter the night of Tally Peet's full chicken and everyone getting cut off in the restaurant)
-Sven (old Norweigian skipper who shut down Michelle)
-Larry (Dawe's drunken persona who spent his days quadruple fisting in the pool on a floatie getting towed around by young British kids)

... ranch, a couple of us go for a hike in the neighborhood, and end up at a farm where they are growing bananas and a few hogs (smelly). We also explore the property and see the swimming pool and the obstacle course, which they are no longer using for safety reasons. All in all it has been a good day, and I'm glad we haven't let the rain deter us from having fun anyway! Nevertheless, I'm hoping for good weather for our rafting trip tomorrow! Hugs, Dan

La Cueva - Hotel Restaurante Guesthouse

In El Cedro is 80 km from Punta Cana and there you can find one of the most beautiful, virgin and amazing beaches of the Caribbean - the beach of Playa Limon, in the National Park Laguna Redonda y Limon. Near the beach (300m) you can find the small Hotel La Cueva with 7 rooms and the ...

Two weeks till I know where I will live

... going to be living. This waiting nonsense is really starting to bother us. You all remember how long it took for me to be placed in the DR and how annoying that was... Well this is about like that. Everyone knows everything but we wont know till the day before we leave. It is all very secretive and annoying. Soon enough. The good news is that I will be in the surprisingly not much-missed land of cell phones when I get back to the capital as well. We will receive them that ...
