Geneva to Paris to Sedan to Bastogne

... 8221; which rather confused the German. He had to ask if that was a positive or negative reply, and was assured it was definitely negative. And the Americans held out in the coldest winter weather on record, until relieved. It is an inspiring story of valor and perseverance. I never tire of walking around Bastogne and thinking about what happened there.

I had a pizza for dinner and came back to my room fairly early to get some work done on my laptop. Tomorrow will be another busy day.

Our Day in the Country

... heard some Luxemburgish music and I liked it. Conrad worked on the computer to map our route for tomorrow while Karyn and I chatted. Spoogy sat in her lap for a bit and then made his way to mine. He is a very sweet dog! We all went to bed at 11 pm. I stayed up for an hour more to upload pictures while making a tent with my blanket. I hid under it because it was warmer that way! I drifted off to sleep at midnight.
City in the trees

Of course I needed to visit Luxembourg, hiding away there between France, Germany and Belgium. It is the fifith smallest country in the world. It is very hilly and surrounded by trees. The hostel is down at the bottom of a cliff, yay! The city of course is quite small, but it is surrounded by ruins and forest which makes it quite a unique city in amongst the hustle and crowds of all the other major cities. The people there speak French and their own language, Luxembourgish I suppose.

From Fairy Tale Land back to World War II

... from Vianden. The museum was very interesting with a very interesting history. Since it's early origins, the founders of the museum were guided by one key bottom line: the balanced, impartial and objective representation of the historical facts of the Battle with detailed and historically correct close-up on the three sides of that major 1944/45 military conflict: the German, the American, and the civilian side. This goal was primarily reached through the creation of life-size and ...

Day trip from Luxembourg City

... Ken, Alex and I went out to the Place d'Armes, and it was ALIVE. Lots of people out, all the restaurants and pubs were wide open and it looked like everyone was having fun. We went to a pub called Banana's, which was VERY smokey inside (Ken wasn't pleased) but we sat there for a good two or three hours anyway. They served full litres of beer in a huge stein. Let me tell you, you can't put back much more after finishing that one. Speaking of beer, we've been trying lots of ...

Castle Vianden and a posh dinner!

... they tried to keep topping up my glass! Having trouble choosing, we shared starters of goats cheese ravioli (Raviole de chevre) and prawn tempura with prawns and Chinese style vegetables (Tempura de Scampis). Next Owain had a fillet of Beef with pureed potatoes (Filet de Boeuf) and I had Medaillon Lotte from the fish section. I had no idea what it was but thought I'd give it a try, I found out later it was monk fish on a pea risotto. It was ...

... wonderful and especially nice at night when lit up. Then we were off in our Skoda Roomster to the towns of Echternach, Clervaux, Dierkirch, and Ettlebruck - some or all of which were heavily involved in WWII. Saw a US Sherman tank involved in the war at the Chateau in Clervaux. These towns are all in the central or NE part of Luxembourg. Luxembourg is a very small country - only 999 square miles. The castle in Chervaux was used by ...

It was, again, very beautiful and scenic and fun and lots of other descriptive stuff I could put into a run-on sentence. After about 2.5 hours I finally made it to Vianden and WOW! The first time I saw the castle I almost fell off my bike (partly because I was ...
