Split - quiet but good weather

... and making sure we had everything we needed.

Just went and had a short walk around and baked trout dinner at Serum which was a cool little place like being in someones living room.
Went to a couple of bars afterwards and found out why it was so quiet in Split - Sunday is the "day of the dead" (the way the barman in the first bar explained it to me) which is the day of the year that everyone visits the graves of their ...

What we thought would be a vacation...

... it was the perfect time to be sick. We just watched movies on his laptop, American shows on the TV with 2 channels (Friends, Xena Warrior Princess…), cooked, and played Chess on our mini travel set. Overall, it was nice to relax but I know I started feeling a little bored.

Saturday came around and the storm was clearing (only a little bit of rain and clouds that morning). We then hopped on a ferry to another island, called Korcula.

Croatia beaches

After we left the park, the drive down to where we are now was spectacular, although a bit different than I pictured Croatia to be-it is a lot rockier and a bit more like what we thought Greece would be like. Our second campsite was just before the town of Zadar in a town called Nin; we pulled in and this funny little man came up to us-there was no way we could say no to his smiling face even if the campsite was horrible! Luckily ...

Cruising in Croatia

... 5 Kiwis and 1 Englishman. First order of the day ... beer .. yes beer - they have a bar onboard so all you do is order your drink and say what room number. Dangerous yes, because you just build up your tab slowly. Well the first few beers went down well. We all mingled over lunch and couple more drinks.

Stopping at our first swimming stop we all were full of excitement. Couple of the boys just jumped straight in as soon as the anchor was dumped. Being the first stop, we ...

Island Time

Today we hopped another ferry out to Hvar Island, which turned out to be more touristy than we thought. It's a gorgeous place with huge yachts, a great old fortress overlooking the small town, and lots of other tiny islands you can boat out to and spend the day sunning yourself and swimming. It also has a strange mix of rich and poor. Those ...

Day Rocks and Night Rocks

Franca and I took a day trip to an island called Brac. The nicest beach in all of Croatia is supposed to be there - Zlatni Rat Beach. Apparently it is the beach that is used in most of Croatia's tourism brochures. I wanted to see this place prior to coming to Croatia so I was glad that Franca wanted to do the same. The cost of the day trip was friggin expensive. Croatia is killing my budget. God I hope Iran, Syria and India is as cheap as ...

Can't get enough of Hvar!

... for an evening nap, we wake up later than planned and make it to Carpe Diem by 11:30 and meet up with the Haitians and buy a few bottles at a table. We make plenty of friends and then head back over to the castle late night where the debauchery continues until we find ourselves back on the steps at 5am. We don't make it to breakfast this time around and fall asleep like its my job.

Getting to know Hvar

... boat dock and then Cameron boarded to see if the deckhands knew where his bag was. I could see him talking to them and then could see them shrug their shoulders and point inside. 'I don't know, go and have a look' they seemed to be saying. By this time everyone had disembarked and those joining the ferry had boarded. I started to get nervous, as there was no sign of Cameron and the ferry was preparing to leave to go on to Korcula. I stood with one foot on the ...

Dubrovnik to Hvar

... a small room with a private bath. the home was overlooking the old town, and had a view of the citadel, a fortress that protected the town since the 1500's, but there has been something at the site since the 2nd century AD. We wandered around the harbor and town, had a wonderful dinner up one of the narrow alleys. Then relaxed in the harbor until it was time to call it a night.
