... in the brain we headed back to experience more of that wonderful vibe that the old town has to offer. This place has a truly powerful history that may be part of the reason why Sarajevans are so passionate about living life to the fullest. We can see this place becoming the next Prague as it has so much to offer (and eat!), feels as safe as can be, and will keep you busy for days. We unfortunately have to say goodbye for now as we are heading to Croatia. Megan and Kevin

Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina michlacSarajevo was the most interesting place of the whole trip. Packed with history and culture having being the place where Arch Duke Franz Ferdinand was assisinated causing WW1 followed by the Nazi persecution of the locals in WW2. Things looked up in the 80s when Sarajevo hosted the 1984 Winter Olympics but unfortunately this was ...
Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina ingridtI never in my mind...or my other mind thought I would be in Sarajevo ever in my life or my other life, but I'm so glad I have. The city is another amazing mixture of cultures that has defied the odds and survived in this East meets West frontier land. There is snow on the hills, the first I've seen since I was in Truckee in Feb. The olymipics were held here and now I can see why. The city and ...
Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina tigo2... war to take place in Sarajevo; the Latin Bridge was the spot where Archduke Franz Ferdinand was killed, spurring the start of WWI. The tour ended with lunch - burek for me. Burek are a type of pastry made with filo dough, somewhat similar to the Greek spanakopita, though in Bosnia there are burek made with spinach, cheese, potato, or meat. I didn't try the meat one for obvious reasons, but the other three are all very good and make for a cheap ...
Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina laura1... were helpful - I suppose. Our guide recalled that "the smurfs" improved morale by handing out sweets to the local children and letting them climb on their tanks. This seems like a lot of money being spent on doing not very much at all - particularly considering that the siege ended so quickly after intervention was decided upon. How is this a solution for anybody? When asked about the UN we were told that they were "professional apologisers". They would do ...
Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina claude_and_iain... by the mosque, who was able to explain all the different parts of the building to us, as well as the (very) basic Islamic faith. I'll put what he said here, just in case you don't know, but also to remind me when I read this back. There are calls to prayer five times a day, and every man should come to pray at least once a day. Women are not obliged to come, but are allowed, provided they cover up sufficiently so as not to distract the men. The men have to wash their hands, legs and feet ...
