... the magnificent Grossglockner drive we head to Hallstatt a small authentic Austrian village perched on the edge of the lake. Pop 720 and the men dress in leather pants and Austrian ladies look like dolls in their traditional dresses……. except for the 3000 Japanese and American tourists it’s Austrian Fairy land. We had arrived in late and nearly all the hotel/pensions were full and I don’t think they needed a couple of Aussies to add to the mix. Five kms away ...

Today we went to the world heritage site Dachstein Salzkammergut. It was really interesting but also disappointing. The day started again gloomy and very wet, we did not start on our adventure until eleven. But we did see the runners involved in the half day Martin run pass our hotel. We stood on our balcony as they went past with an offical telling them to go to the left to continue around the lake. We were told that we could to the cable car from our hotel and ...

... lots of steps if you wanted to get to some hotels. The town is situated on a narrow ledge, wedged between the mountain and the lake. We walked to the tiny square with the trinity plinth ( meaning the town survived the plague) found the water fall that tumbles through the town, looked at a few touristy shops( when the rain got heavier) trying on tourist Austrian hats. I like the red one with the feather. We also looked at two churches. One was very plain compared ...

... Haus Am See'. After settling into our room, it was 2 pm we were told they have no restaurant, only serve breakfast. We had to walk further into the village that was spread out. We walked along the lake, then walked following the Traun ( river) up to the road that takes you to Hallstatt by car. We had a look at Winkel, just a group of houses, and found a cafe. The cafe was run but a young family with two small children who were as cute as buttons. We had a coffee then waked ...

... but we had to cross the road, the cars were speeding along a bit nerve racking! Arriving at the lake I thought it was going to be just tourist land, there was a huge car park, tourist info, shops and restaurants. Once we got on the boat, it was. Just quiet and the beautiful lake. The boat used electric motors. We spent most of the day visiting the different spots and going for walks. We had lovely hot chocolate that set us up for more waking! When we ...
