Bikaner is known for the Camel Festival in January each year. It's a fascinating small town to wander. Friendly people, a colourful marketplace, a well-preserved palace and lots of haveli. Bikaner's haveli aren't painted as they are in the Shekhawati region, but they are ornately carved. I stayed at the very funky and beautiful, Bhairon Vilas, which is a redone palace right out of the Arabian nights. My room was in the top of the tower! http://hotelbhaironvilas.tripod.com/ A 50km bus ride fro...
Bikaner, Rajasthan, India pedalpaddle... biscuits on a sand dune. The kids had great fun rolling down the dunes and racing each other against skinny Sandy. We had a lovely dinner served in candlelight and accompanied by an old desert man on drums with an accordion type instrument and his 7 year old Grandson. The kids taught our young guide, Sanday (must be made up name?) how to play cards by candlelight on the small table perched overlooking the desert. The choice of sleeping arrangements was either; in a couple of small tents ...
Bikaner, Rajasthan, India cawleyadventure... made lake. Made from red sandstone and surrounded by a moat and a 986 metre long wall, Junagadh stands proud and imposing over the city. On entering the fort you are met with elaborate courtyards, beautifully decorated rooms and views across the Thar Desert.

The main reason we came to Bikaner was to visit the Karni Mata Temple, probably India's strangest attraction. As legend would have it, in the 14th century Karni Mata was a powerful cult leader, who would ...

Bikaner, Rājasthān, India seorajeshkumar... I'm happy. Plus, they have Internet. More soon... Sorry I'm not writing every day. Internet is not as easy to access as I might have thought. ACTUAL from Journal (Mar 10): We left the hotel around 9 am and went to the palace in Bikaner. It was a pretty large museum with lots of artifacts to see, but I was a little tired from the previous night and woke up early with the worst stomach upset I've had all trip. It made me quite nervous so I ...
Bikaner, Rajasthan, India mikela... Himalayas. We asked them if they'd done much cycling before and the guy said "yes, 2 weeks around Spain". Ooooooook....?! Then a guard came along and told us we all had to move out as it was a ladies only carriage!! The toy train was rammed full. Do we get in with the bearded turbans and their homes in a hankerchief tied to the end of a stick or do we brave it with a carriage full of men with gaping eyes at the sight of us? It's quite disconcerting in India. Men ...

The milk has been shown to be beneficial in TB and diabetes. We didn't try the milk but we heard that it is very salty and doesn't taste the greatest. We then were able to check our email for a 30 or so minutes and then back to the hotel to sleep.
Bikaner, India charlieandedna... do we get off, but apart from that the journey there was ok and quite an experience. They sure do know how to make use of every available space on a bus! The reason for our trip to Deshnok was the 'Karni mata temple', to me and you the 'temple of rats' where they worship the delightful little creatures. We had to take our shoes of to enter but were chicken and kept on our socks. This was just another experience to add to our list-was pretty amazing and surprisingly not that scary to be ...
Bikaner, India danandmichelle... after a couple of months apart. After speaking and telling stories, we went our separate ways. Once we had found our digs, we went for a walk around the town. Straight out from the station was a huge Sony shop with giant plasma screen TV's. I wondered how many Indians would be rushing over there to buy them !!! In fact, there were quite a few large electronic stores in the town, and just like the Sony store, there was nobody in any of them ...
