Hotel Betnava Maribor

After an early morning start that saw us leaving Ptuj at 8am, we arrived in Maribor just after 9:30am, finding me a nice hostel to dump my bags, we went off in search for a couple of alcoholic bevies prior to Leannes train to Graz at 10:30...
We stumbled into a cafe and sheepishly ordered two beers - not so unusual for eastern europe where everyone seems to have a ...

... I'm not too sure how long we were on the bus, but we were herded back onto a train heading to Ljublijana, with our heads out the window, it felt like we were heading directly towards the sun, as the front of the train obscured the sun setting, it created a pink golden sunset that contrasted nicely against the greenery of the agricultural fields...

We got off in Ptuj - unsure of our destination or if we could to Maribor that ...

... a sausage and off we went.



On the way back we dropped into a group of houses, again off the beaten track, where Vesna used to spend her holidays as a child with her grand-parents. There was even some bloke still living there...



Vesna didn't exactly recognise him, but I think they used to play together when they were children. He's probably not that far away from the ...

... not, I'd be pretty embarrassed there having to use Croatian all the time and not knowing any Slovenian...



This is the actual house where Tito was born... apparently. The whole village has been bought up and it's now a museum village. Normally there is an entrance fee to go into the village but as luck would have it the day we were there it was free.

I suppose nowadays the name Tito ...

We took the train from Vienna through Graz to Maribor, in Slovenia, enjoying spectacular scenery as we wound through the mountains which were encircled by Alpine meadows in full May bloom.  Maribor is Slovenia's second city and will be a European capital of culture in 2012. We arrived on a sleepy Saturday afternoon in the glorious sunshine. The Hostel Alibi was pretty basic but otherwise fine ...

... Sieger herzlich zu seiner überragenden Leistung gratulieren. Auch der 2.platzierte Michael Peel konnte den alten Rekord unterbieten und erreichte nach 24 Stunden und 12 Minuten glücklich das Ziel. Der Bürgermeister von Kalch kam höchstpersönlich mit dem Rad dem Läufer entgegen um ihn anzufeuern und gratuliert jedem finischer persönlich im Ziel. Die weiteren Finischer: 3. ... There was a pretty cool war memorial - I'm not sure how well you can see from the photo but there are all sorts of images of world ...

... After lunch, we decided to go walk around Maribor instead of listen to more gibberish (that's where we found the internet cafe with no usb port for pictures). We sat out in front of the cafe having drinks under the balcony where Hitler spoke to win over the Czechs. We met up with the conference goers again as they walked past us on their way to a gallery set up for the event. A quick look around, and we headed back to Radjle for dinner.
