    ... so heat exhaustion and dehydration were not the threats they were for yesterday's cyclists.

    It was quite a descent. First, right near the top was a small uphill that none of us pedalled over since we got enough momentum from the downhill just before it to carry us over--that was cool! Then after that there were relatively steep sections with tight switchbacks alternating with longer straight runs. This would definitely be the more difficult direction to climb from.

We then carried on, but having been told by the woman at our last hotel that restaurants etc would not be open on a Monday, we stopped at a grocery store at 1215, and ate our lunch in the parking lot.     ... according to the sign offered less than the 14% grade I was anticipating. In retrospect, I think the sign refers to the maximum grade over any kilometre, rather than maximum grade for any shorter distance, because for the first time I was going slow enough that flies became a problem, something I have heard others complain off but heretofore haven't experienced.
