We hired a taxi driver to take us for a drive up to Batu Ferringhi this afternoon. A lovely Malaysian Indian man who told us all about his daughters, the youngest of whom was sick because she ate all his ice cream from the freezer and exacerbated her cold so he told us!

Under the temple there was a museum which traces the history of the clans back to the first settlers in Penang who came to work for the British in part to escape famine, and marking the achievements of those members who brought riches and prosperity to the clan. ... several water monitors (lizards) lounging on the beach. These massive lizards (not as large as the Komodo dragon but pretty darn big) were soaking up the sun without a care in the world. As we slowly approached and I tried to take a few photographs they stealthily made their way across the beach and disappeared into the very dense forest foliage. One of them crossed right over the trail where we were walking; he/she must have been at least 2 meters long!

... but it is within public distance to other things in Penang. We had a day of visiting temples and view tops as it had been a while. We took an hour bus to the Kem Lok Si Temple. This is the biggest Buddhist temple in Penang and was certainly impressive on the drive up. A massive statue and multicoloured pagoda were sat atop a hill. Sure you have to climb through hoards of touristy shops to get there, but in the entrance were a whole host of turtles! All were different ...
