Stopover in Bavaria

Last night we drove, and drove, and drove. We were hoping to stop in Munich so we could do a brief sightseeing tour in the morning, but it was impossible to find a hotel. We were told to drive far out of the city if we wanted to get a room. So we continued on until we finally got to Augsburg, where we managed to get two rooms in one of the two Ibis hotels. This morning we walked to the Old Town ...

Sunday, day 5

... Danube Canal runs just outside the walls.

nothing was open today, being sunday, but we enjoyed exploring the wall and the tiny houses and streets within. unfortunately, there are no plaques or signs explaining details of these historic buildings and towns. we are on our own to learn and discover more, but finding information on line has been difficult.

... of many cities and sights in Germany, Switzerland, Holland, and Venice. The models of cities, including all sorts of street scenes where quite impressive. We marvelled at the Lego versions of the things that we had seen: Downtown Amsteram, Neuschwanstein castle, the peak of the Schilthorn, the 10,000 foot peak from which we had hike down. We saw Venice, including the bus boats we had ridden a few weeks ago. The thought and ...

... closest I can get is Arnberg. To the east is the border with the Czech Republic.

We meandered along the Glas Strasse which is the most amazing place. It is an area which has been working with glass for more than 600 years in a whole variety of ways. Reidl glass, Zwiesel Glass and many other famous glass houses operate there. We saw some wonderful glass. One place especially was so awesome. A whole park full of glass and metal and wood sculptures - huge Alice ...

Augsburg - Day 2 (Amy's photos)

... over and down the road a bit. This was a proper cathedral as they had real candles with actual flames (most touristy churches/cathedrals) have now changed over to electric ones where you can insert your 10->50 cents to light one and make a prayer. The real candles look better. Spent the afternoon walking, talking, relaxing, checking internet again.

Travel to Augsburg - Day 1 (Amy's photos)

Took the train to Augsburg around midday and it took only an hour and a half to get there. Whilst on the train it started to look quite grey outside. As we were pulling into Augsburg the rain was coming down. We got wet getting from the train to the covered part of the station and once out of the rain got to see some flashes of light ...

Residenz

Once we got back to Munich we found a beer house and had a great traditional German meal- schnitzel, potatoes and sauerkraut, eaten with a stein of course, and in my case it was half beer and lemonade. We then walked through the Residenz, the former Bavarian royal residence. The first building on this site was in 1385. The buildings consist of many architectural styles, including Baroque, Rococo ...

KZ Dachau

... where the barracks were set up but now are gone. To think that such horrible things were commited by humans was really a depressing thought. I visited the crematories and then the Jewish memorial, as well as the evangelical church (protestant) on site. There might've been a Catholic one, but I didn't remember it being there. Six million Jews, along with countless other political prisoners, Russian POWs, Gypsies were systematically enslaved and ...

OKTOBERFEST 2005!!!!!

... the locals to get the real Oktoberfest experience. All the boys went hard all day. John had something like 7 steins, so that's a hell of a lot of beer to have in one day. Even if it was over 9 hours. Michelle and Dave didn't even last that long, Dave had to carry Michelle home after she had a few steins. Everyone was all very drunk and we just had a blast. Everyone in the tent was up dancing on the chairs, singing and "prosting" with their big beer steins. The next ...
