On June 1 we took a train from Paris to Amsterdam for a week long trip to stay with my Dutch family. My uncle Serge hosted us for the first part of the trip. Very convenient location for us to spend some time in the city, he lives in an apartment overlooking the Ij River where all sorts of boats and ships come by. Some city highlights were the beautiful canals, FOAM (film and ...

We tried the highly touted American Bar, but got no service, only surliness (or more accurately, we were just ignored!) So we left--voting with our wallets!--and found a great pub a few blocks away. The staff were fun, we had a great pizza, Karen got some good beer, and we were happy campers once more!

I don't know what it is about Amsterdam but I will try and put it into words ...

Upon arrival in Amsterdam we were happy to learn that the weather had cleared up a bit which would make the next part of our journey, finding the apartment we had rented, at least a bit easier. Following the advice of Bree's cousin Kate and her fiancÚ Carson we used the website and it worked out great to rent an apartment in a great part of town for our four night stay in Amsterdam. In fact the owner of the apartment even told us which tram to take ...

... to the front and take a picture and we weren't that interested. Now that it is nearing the end of our trip we are kind of tired of being tourists. We decided we were going to be frugal locals and take the underground "tube" back to the area of our hotel before dinner. Well we kept getting confused and some man became very concerned for us and helped us out quite a bit. We ended up giving him $10 and by the time we did all of the train transfers and buying tickets I would say it ...
