... the Island in Myrtos. The stops before Myrtos were unremarkable but the drive over there, in a four hour loop, took in some staggering views and both beautiful and bleak countryside. Myrtos is a small town/large village on the sea and has a somewhat cool vibe as lots of back packers stop there to apparently sleep in the beach (although we didn't see any camping on the sand). Following a bizarre hotel breakfast buffet which included orange cordial, cake, ...

... Karpathos, specifically Olympos, actually means around 500 people. It's hardly Wembley. We spent the last day driving the jeep down the East coast stopping at Aleppa which was again beautiful with its turquoise clear waters, arriving in Pighadia, also known as Karpathos in the late afternoon. ... the interesting parts and the stories. So it was nice to go there but not mind blowing. I think we're all a little jaded from the barrage of cultural sights we've experienced in the last week or so. Probably the best thing was hearing from Lena about day to day life on Crete. How married couples are given houses by their parents, what age they marry, pregnancy out of wedlock is a precious baby and many Cretian brides walk down the aisle in their white dress ...

    Arrival

A travel blog entry by hanlonsmith on Jul 16, 2015

Having read the reviews on TripAdvisor (and we read the awful ones first right?) I arrived expecting a battle axe to greet us, akin to Hattie Jakes' character in Carry on Abroad; large, loud and taking no nonsense from her guests or her beaten-down husband. Well Maria is large, kinda width-wise but as short as the little Krankie but not as, well, cranky as I expected. You can see how some people wouldn't warm to her but we notched up the charm a few points and I think ...
