... We stopped in a tiny cafe and ordered pizza for brunch. What a disappointment! We think it may have been frozen. Hard to believe, the worst pizza we ever had was in Italy! Later that afternoon, after exploring the city, we had pizza again, and this time it was one of the best we had ever had, and in a charming sidewalk restaurant.
Headed back to Chamonix late afternoon.
... station in France, we then headed to the Buffet Carriage to take in the views. They've got windows in the upper part of the carriage here, so you can get yourself a beverage and take in the scenery. It's still impressive but the only downside that the weather wasnt so great and so we didnt see it's full majesty as clouds were covering some of the largest mountains.

... was good, but odd: a great thick vegatable soup followed by meatballs on cabbage, instead of pasta (hey, we're in Italy - what's going on?!). Interesting company at dinner - a British guy and his Dutch wife, an Israeli guy travelling alone, and an American couple from Pennsylvania.
I think I kept the whole dorm room up with my snoring that night (or so Barbara tells me).
... and our legs and knees felt like petrified tree stumps by the time we reached town. Before Courmayer was the very charming village of Dolonne, which was a treat with its stone streets
Still it felt great to be in a real town after several days of remote wilderness. We had a private room at the hotel and a pizza and wine dinner at a nearby restaurant. We could finally check email and go to an ...
Leaving the refuge the next morning we passed a memorial to a half dozen US fliers who had died on the mountain nearby during WWII when their bomber crashed into the mountain. Some of their remains remained frozen in ice till the 1970's when they were returned to the US for burial.
