... the cold, we were also able to empty the water and toilet and fill with fresh water. We decided to have lunch before setting off again. as soon as we turned away from the lake the houses had a more alpine feel. Before long the rain changed to snow. As we climbed the snow became deeper, the ploughs were doing a good job at keeping the road clear. We passed quite a few vehicles that had stopped to put on their snow chains, it's compulsory ...

    • I slept in and then caught the late morning train to St Moritz
    • It took 2 hrs to get there through some of the most amazing scenery I have seen.
    • After arriving I walked around town for a while with my backpack as check in wasn't until 5pm!!!
    • I walked to the lake and took a few pictures and then went into town. To get there I had to take probably the longest escalator I have ever ...

    • It
was raining outside so I caught the bus this time to the train station.
I ended up at the Schaffhausen train station instead of the Neuhausen
one but it didn't really make any difference ...

... Swiss culture. There's some Heidi tourism here-and the town itself does have a small "old town" with winding alleys and a cool castle, which I wander around a couple of times. Castles are pretty rare in Switzerland. I guess you could say the whole country is a natural castle. There's a maps showing the official "Heidi house" way up the mountain. Reluctantly I opt to skip it... but I do pass the Heidi fields ...

    Day 278

Things get a little confusing after Landquart. I follow what I think is a path to the next town, across the wide grassy valley, but no, it dead ends in a field. I backtrack and look for another way. I could just follow the road, but I've managed to avoid roads in all of Switzerand, so why start using them now? Instead I follow ...
