We returned to Geneva in the afternoon by which time the roads had been shut so an enormous traffic jam made it slow progress but eventually we parked the car and Graham racked his bike and went for a practice swim.     ... rusty, especially with my listening/comprehension skills - everyone speaks so quickly! - but I've been able to make myself understood all day, at grocery stores and patisseries and train stations alike. I'm looking forward to improving, and especially to my ears catching up with my mouth.

    Tomorrow begins orientation, so I'll be visiting the campus (about thirty minutes away from the dorms, just outside the city) for the first time ...

    Another very cold day (max of 2/3 degrees), but I love it because it is so different from Christmas weather in Oz.
    Unfortunately nothing special at breakfast in my hotel this Christmas morning so I'm a little disappointed.

    But an excellent lunch makes up for it. John booked the three of us into an up-market restaurant in the elegant Le Palace de Menthon ...
