Gdansk, Sopot - and Solidarity!

Glorious Gdansk We booked a new route flight from East Midlands Airport with BMI Baby to Gdansk but were somewhat miffed to receive an e-mail saying the flight was cancelled - and we had booked the hotel. It took 5 minutes to find replacement flights courtesy of Wizz www.wizzair.com and although we chose to go from Luton, other local options include Doncaster/Sheffield and Coventry. I've seen their jazzy bright pink and purple planes in various airports and thought how attractive they looked....

... S. Embassy might be close enough to sign documents.

So out into the sun and down to the pier. The pier here is quite famous. It is 500 meters long and has had a checkered history. It survived two World Wars and also survived misguided intentions to just pull it all down. Now it is being revived again with a marina scheduled to open next to it in a couple of years. For now, locals and tourists ...

Deliciously Decadent Drink

I am not a hot chocolate drinker. Maybe one or two Swiss Miss packets in a 2 or 3 year period is about enough for me and then I need enough marshmallows to totally take over the chocolate. So a couple of years ago (already!), traveling in Croatia, one of the other tourists (Thank you Heather!), got a cup of hot chocolate at a roadside restaurant. I was intrigued to see that ...

After looking at all the beds and prices and never seeing a clerk come close, we leave.

A restaurant on the sea shore. Many people sitting at tables outside for the sunset and the breeze ...

Gdansk Revisited

Back to Gdansk today to see if we can get into some of the museums that we missed yesterday because everything is closing early these days. Tourist season officially must be over but there are still plenty of tourists around the area. We are now almost experts on moving about on the trams so got to the main tourist street quite quickly. The amber museum was still not open. It is housed in ...

Doughnuts, Waffles, and Bread, Oh My!

We have observed a phenomenon across several countries now. Doughnuts are not breakfast food any more in much of Asia. We're used to Dunkin’ Donuts being open by 6:30 or 7 in the morning so you can stop on your way to work and pick up coffee and doughnuts, either just for yourself or for everyone. If ...

... and vibe is so different to Warsaw, there are loads of (good!!) buskers - similiar to Riga - there are street performers everywhere, classical to salsa/funk to a bunch of teens breakdancing to 80s synth tunes (I kid you not!!). There is a main street that runs for between two city gates (the Green Gate and the Gold gate) which is the ...

3 Days in Gdansk

... faces, a painting of a London Bobby, a piano and a collection of old radios. We order 2 beers and descended into a dingy basement with small alcoves perfect for elicit meetings with spies or ladies of the night. After a few rounds of cards, made our escape for fresh air only stopping briefly to try a couple of fiery orange vodka shots. The woman behind the bar was adamant we should try one type of vodka while an old man to my left seemed sure we should pick the orange one ...

... and just saw them from the bus or stopped just long enough to get off, snap a shot and get back on. We sat in the front of the bus and the window kept leaking on me so I was soaked before we even started. We stopped at the Oliwa Cathedral, built in the 13th century and on the grounds of an old monastery. It has a huge organ and two smaller ones, consisting of 7,876 tin and wood pipes which can imitate the sounds of different musical ...

... the undercover "cops" that patrol the tram cars and secretly pull out their badges targeting the unsuspecting tourist. Well we were caught on the way to the train station in Krakow. Only 2 tickets but in need of 2 more. The guy told us that since we couldnt buy them from him we would have to pay a fine that amounted to $20 for the both of us. We told him we'd get off as we didnt realize there was such a policy. He said ...
