DAY 6 - Madrid

DAY 6 - Madrid By Friday and we were exhausted. In six days we'd seen all sides of Spain and more of the country than some people see in a month's time here. Touristy Costa del Sol, Malaga, one-of-a-kind Granada, hidden Jaen, isolated Bedmar, and modern, Americanized Madrid. We had a map of Madrid with highlighted walking routes that would take us past El Museo del Prado, Centro de Arte Reina Sofia, Palacio Real, Parque del Retiro, Real Jardin Botanico, and everything else on a list of Madrid...

The first Days

Hola!

So I arrived safe at 10 in the morning with my 2, 70lb suitcases, needless to say the cab driver was not too thrilled. I then went to Miguels apartment with him which is a cute one bedroom apartment near retiro park! P.s Miguel is a good spanish friend of my grandfather who has come to escort me around Spain.
As advised we stayed up until about 2 when we then took a long nap so that we were not exhausted! But the first day we didnt really do ...

Madrid

Normal 0 Friday, 4/10/09 Took train to Segovia, 100 miles northwest of Madrid, elevation 3000 ft. Madrid folks go there in the summer for relief from the heat. It being only April!, "relief from the heat" translated to snow! Scenery was beautiful but we were COLD! Oops, we discovered we were on the slow train with a 1.5 hour layover in the little town of Villalba. Made the best of it by trying to find a place to ...

Madrid: Plazas, Palaces, and Museums

... which we entered just as it began to rain. I usually don't pay to enter palaces (i.e. I've refused to enter palaces and castles as famous as the Schoenbrunn, Schloss Nymphenburg, Schloss Charlottenberg, Rosenborg Slot, Prasky Hrad, Sansoucci, etc.) because my philosophy is once you've seen a handful of magnificent rooms lavishly furnished in a seventeenth century style, you've seen them all and the biggest differences you'll find are the exteriors and the ...

Giddy like a schoolgirl

... amazingly vibrant city, famous for its university and crawling with beautiful Spanish women. Why couldn't I have done my engineering degree in Spain??? So off to Spain again - for the fourth time! But for the first time, this trip didn't involve any crazy plan to sweep a beautiful Spanish senorita from Toledo off of her feet. The same old crazy Canadian is still there, but times have changed - I really don't feel the same any more ...

Sitges and Figueres

... to beat the hordes...I didnīt think they would travel that far off the beaten path...Figueres is about the size of Taos back in the good old days...in fact it brought back a lot of memories for me...oh, and the toy museum was pretty neat as well. I could not believe they pulled together over 4,000 different toys! Neat...but creepy childrensī music and strange dolls....a scary place to ...

Madrid

... evening we arrived at the train station to take a night train into Barcelona. This was a very bizzare experience as our sleeper car was basically 3 beds stacked on top of each other; one set on each side of the car. You could reach out in front of you and touch everyone else in the car with you. Thank goodness this was the beginning of our trip and not the end, where dirty laundry would cause some issues.

Hungover like a dog

... discussing the magnificence and enormity of life the world and why the hell we're here, the type of conversation that inevitably crops up when you're on the opposite side of the globe amid an eye opening life changing adventure. Returned back to the Mad hostel and cooked up a stir fry with Nick and Rev, chatting with the random hostel folk from multiple countries, a melting pot of excellent people from different cultures and alternate ...
