... a pleasant 16C at 9:30am, which rose to about 30C by lunchtime. Hot, but after nearly freezing to death on Col du Galibier, neither of us is complaining.

The Col de Vars is another long steady climb, which offers some respite at about 9 km on reaching the three villages that are part of Vars. The first is the original village, the second two seem to make up the ski station.

... locals disregarded the heavily marked giant bays and even parked across the waste disposal area! Not a problem. We have become wise to city Aires and didn't need the water and waste options. We filled up and emptied at our free Aire in the sticks last night. They are the best ones and your happy to buy in their shops and use their facilities as they make so much effort to welcome you. After a horrid nights sleep, with 3 of us not well, we left Asti and drove towards the French border and the formidable Alps. We encountered quite a few tunnels that we had to drive through with some being over 5kms long. At least this saved us having to wind our way through the mountains. Once again there were snow capped mountains on either side of us.
