The half way point
... some significant wealth at some point as there are a large number of very old big ritzy residences. We are staying in one that has been converted into a hotel. Barcelonnette is well off the beaten track so it's history must be a little obscure. Tomorrow we go over the Alps into Italy and spend two days at Portofino. Three Passes
... the first one, La Bonette. What a lovely road and a total contrast to yesterdays goat track. The surface was like a runway and consequently it is a favourite for motorcyclists and bicyclists.

Alps!!! French ones
... out of date. He marks the best rides with purple but I have ridden a few of them and seriously doubt that I would be calling major thoroughfares with trucks "best rides". Some of them are not even twisty - just dead straight and boring.

Day 4
We awoke this morning in Gap to sunshine. It felt quite cool when I did my post-breakfast walk outside, so we all dressed for slightly chilly weather. Tom led us about a km down the street to get us started in the right direction, then he and Henry headed off to do today's alternate route which was completely different than the nominal one. The rest of us were delighted to have a relativel easy day of 67 km.
