... Later that night, after we'd gone to bed, we were woken by a series of deafening bangs echoing around the surrounding hills, and thought the long-extinct volcanoes had come to life again - but it was just an enormous firework display in nearby Clermont-Ferrand . Nothing is more frustrating than being able to hear a huge firework display but ...
Royat, Auvergne, France oldagetravellerHi everyone I survived the bike and barge after completing about 350 ks for the week. The weather was sensational except for one day that we got caught in the rain riding home one day. Luckily we were near a village that had a bar so the group of 18 took the place over and sat it out. Martin the barge pilot and tour director claims he will not be able to go back there again. The food was amazing with a 3 course hot meal everynight, breakfasts and at ...
Clermont-Ferrand, Auvergne, France caroladele... lifetime of horse-riding skills come to the fore and I grip the monster between my knees. Finally, 5 minutes of pure bliss - not what you're thinking - the hottest, fastest shower I have ever had. When I grabbed the towel after, though, I realised the extent of the disaster - it was soaked. My fleece was dripping, and my cargoes looked as if I shared an incontinence problem with the bloke on the boat the other night. The ...
Clermont-Ferrand, Auvergne, France born2bongo... felt he saw in his country, he agreed to head a government in "Free France" (now usually called "Vichy France") after agreeing to allow the Germans to occupy 3/5 of the nation. After the war he was sentenced to death for treason but had the punishment commuted to life in prison by Charles de Gaulle, on account of his service in WWI. I can't help but think about that history as I drive through Vichy. A great man, a talented, and courageous and ...
Vichy, Auvergne, France joelmeekerOn Le Weekend we met a group of the French kids and clearly they fell in love with us. So shortly after that weekend they wanted to party with us again as soon as they could. And did we ever. Quentin had a number of us over to get to know us a little better. A couple 40s later we were much better acquainted. It was the start of a beautiful friendship.
Vichy, France beccx... We shared the best appetizer ever, tomato and mozzarella salad. Some of the French guys got some traditional french dishes that we got to try. Steak tar tar, which is raw hamburger with a raw egg on top was the most adventurous thing I have ever tried in my life. I tried a really small bite and I think I threw up a little in my mouth but, I am glad that I got to try it. It was such a great weekend, everything was so random, but alotta fun. I just wish that we were more prepared.
Clermont Ferrand, France beccx... Very cute, very clean. That night I met up with some people from my class, very randomly and we went to the Horse Races at the Hippdrome. It was pretty neat, and everyone was pretty cool. They had a heard of begals come out too, with guys on horses dressed in traditional English hunting outfits too. It really made me miss Kosmo. That night we headed to Le Gloulais. That's our pub. They love us there.
Vichy, France beccx... french castle and enjoyed a meal served by a Count and Countess. Yet more serendipity. As we drove into the unassuming driveway, we were greeted by our friendly French host as he waved excitedly from his car, informing us in perfect English, "I am on my way to buy wine, of course, for dinner. My son will welcome you." His son, as it turned out was a 16-year-old who neglected his game of Halo for a few minutes to ...
