A short visit to Safi

... is coming my way. Ten minutes later the drama continues as he walks back into the alley yelling like a victim returning to the crime scene asking for justice. He is having a really hard time letting go and I feel sad for him. Some guys are trying to calm him down and he leaves again. This time he is wearing his shirt. There's some yelling from the main street but I can't distinguish them from the loud hum of the street. There is ...

Meet the Atlantic

... and g'rabbed a Tajine over some 500. After the game (have you noticed that the beer drinking is non-existant here, I feel naked not being able to add "so we had a couple of beers", anyway) we joined some locals and the dutch guys and had a jam session. ALex had his clarinet out playin some very deep dark tunes whilst Proudy went to town on the guitar. The locals tapped the beat on anything they could get their ...

Homecoming

I can't spend more than 24 hours here without making a visit to my old village. Luckily, there is plenty to see there so I don't worry to much about boring guests. I warned Katie, my travel buddy, that we'd have to do a lot of visiting but I'm not sure I adequately prepared her for the four day sugar high of drinking tea with ten families a day! We ...

The Baltimore of Morocco

When I was a PCV Safi was the nearest city to me so I went about once a week to get mail, use the phone, etc. We stopped through to visit a good friend but for the most part it's a rough little industrial port town with far too many corrupt cops and angry young men--we decided it's the "Baltimore of Morocco". We had a lovely evening though. I introduced Katie to the neighborhood public bath, one of my favorite things in Morocco ...

Off to Essouria

... i couldnt hear properly because of my cold, and claire and chris had a few vodka and cokes before hitting the sack as well. The next day we had breakfast before heading to the beach. There was some sort of rally going on and loads of people were on there with music pumping out of a tent and some cars on display. At the start of the beach there was kids playing ball games and older kids making there own music. Further down the beach there was men in white ...

... as we drive through the countryside we see poverty unlike any other so far on this trip. Homes built out of brush, plastic and a few pieces of tin. To see a TV dish on the roof of these homes, although shocking to us, is perhaps the one connection between the two groups. The other striking commonality is friendliness. A smile, a nod, a hello or in the case of children, waving vigorously as we pass, the Moroccan friendliness is unsurpassed. Clothing ...

Essouira- along the coast

... Along the route today, while passing by villages displaying hand made berber rugs in all colors of the rainbow, a seller of a raw sheep or goat skin attmpted to flag us down, thinking we might want to purchase this item and pack it with us maybe. This was odd, bu then he just shrugged and joked it off. Some hours before reaching Essouira along the coast, we began riding the beautiful Tour of Morocco route! The road is newly paved and had Arabic slogans along various stages of ...

A day of wetness!

... over the past week (they check licences and are looking for illegal immigrants) so didn't think much of it. The policeman got on our bus and proceeded to start asking everyone for their ID cards. This, of course, proceeded to take him 15 mins to get through the first quarter or so of the bus. We were near the back and you can imagine how happy we were to be delayed again!!! He got to some tourists 5 or so rows in front of us and got ...

Peaceful Paradise

... seagulls who hover above the fishing boats looking for food. We can also hear the continuous screeching of gulls from our hotel room. Our hotel was inside the medina walls where no vehicles are allowed and thus we had to unload the vans and have porters with handcarts bring our luggage into the hotel, a riad with rooms that face on to an open courtyard. Because of the relatively mild climate and a never-ending supply of fish guts ...
